The one at the top takes five years or more. The second one is ready by dawn the next day. :cool:

Yes and was expected to fly at its limit while they are now restricted to reduce the wear and tear :(
The top image is quite interesting apparently it was found in a scrap yard in Australia :o, I knew I should have emigrated :x

Yeah you should have mate. I know of a Spitty sitting on the bottom of a lake. Crashed during training. Use to police in the area and it was well known. Unfortunately it can't be lifted. The local Aboriginal people won't allow it.
The bottom one looks like its being dismantled for spares - the prop is bent as if it belly landed and I doubt they'd strip everything including the wings just for a service.
Great pic though.

ps the top Spit looks like a 2-seater. Second only to a Merlin-engined Buchon on my all-time list of fugly aircraft.

Reality check - you're not an engineer you're an unemployed long-term engineering student.

I am an engineer if I saw an aircraft being maintained like that I would stop flying buy a bunker and listen to distant sound of aircraft smashing into the ground above me.
Your not an engineer, I don't know what you are but your definitely not an engineer.

About thirty years ago this man found a Mossie in his local aussie scrapyard and amongst other things built himself this;

I still can't decide whether what he did was sacrilege or an interesting variation on the V-twin theme.

Merlins were a dime a dozen in Australia back in the 70s when I was in college. i remember visiting a shed where a guy had half a dozen lined up ready to sell to boat racers. Apparently the boat racing guys chewed through several Merlins a season.
They are also used here as tractor pull engines. The one below has been heavily modified with DOHC and produces substantially more horsepower than stock.

I don't really think the engine on that bike is a Merlin :rolleyes:
Another common engine that is mistakenly referred to as "Merlin" but only looks like one is the Rolls-Royce Meteor, which was the "ground" version of the Merlin, produced for tanks and that had cast pistons (!!!) and lower grade components.

"This engine was built in 1982 and was adapted from a 27 liter V12 aero engine by Australian engineer Lucky Keizer. According to the listing it was used in a streamliner that holds the current Australian record for the 3001cc+ class. The particular V12 used as a source for this V-twin was originally at home on a Mosquito bomber."
