Turns out, if you fight with the mask on enough times, it automatically "upgrades", except in my case it downgraded it back to the +10 rage item.

That's working as intended, and has worked the same way since it was introduced in TL. Read the item description.

So, of note, if I dropped my demons, I end up with +1 morale bonus on my paladin unit with undead. I had no idea they were as happy as me to see a Bone Dragon stack.

So it looks like the demons are irrelevant to this, it's just an issue with true believer not checking if persuasion reduces (but not nullifies) the morale penalty. Does it work similarly with inquisitors, priests, werewolves etc?
