Sounds similar to my problem...

I just received, and installed IL-2 Cliffs of Dover, via Steam. Each time I attempt to start the sim, it works great until I actually go to fly (i.e. all menus work fine, but the gameplay screen doesn't). When I click to "fly", the screen minimizes, the mouse cursor disappears, and all I get are the game's sounds. Joystick buttons seem to work, but all I'm seeing is my computer's desktop. Using alt-x to exit, I then receive notice that states:
"Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered. Display driver NVLDDMKM has stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

My system is a PC, Core 2 Quad 2.83Ghz (Q9550) with 4 Gb of RAM. My video card is an NVidia GeForce 9500GT w/1 Gb, and my sound card is a Creative Labs SB X-FI.

I've tried reducing the graphics settings, without any change in the situation. I've updated my video driver files, again, with no change. Steam is running in all cases. I disabled full-screen mode, and now I get a black screen when going to fly.

Any ideas you can send me would be greatly appreciated.

Ed

From the threads I linked to:

- Try disable AVG
- Change DirectX version in the conf.ini

I reverted back to DirectX 9 and presto, I can see the cockpit now! Thanks a million! I still have to fly with all the graphics set to low (that'd be my GeForce 9500GT card, tho, not the sim). It's a huge step in the right direction, tho!

Check if NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS is in the list of supported cards.

Then search for recommendations for low end cards (like running low res in window, etc.)

With my 9500GT card, all the settings set to low, and only shadows and road active, and screen set to a 1024x768 window, I flew for 23 minutes and change then the sim froze up, with a couple of partial video losses just before the freeze. So, today, I bit the bullet and dropped $465.00 for an Nvidia GTX 580 ($400) and an 850-watt power supply ($65). I figure this ought to do the trick!

Welcome to the world of perfection!! This game is a totally different experience on maxed out settings which shouldn't be a problem with your new card.
