The T1600 uses Hall sensors and that should be a big plus. I have never owned one but, it seems like those that do, feel it's a good choice.
As for an HOTAS style, I just upgraded to an X52Pro but if I were on a tight budget give me a Saitek X45 any day! These can be found at bargain prices and mine was uttely reliable, durable and well built!

I have had mine for a while now and the only thing that has annoyed me is that they didnt include an option to turn that damn bright blue light off
