View Full Version : My AI flight will not attack- drives me crazy!

In many of the missions Quick ,Single,Campaigns,no matter waht I do I cannot get my squadron buddies to attack.Oh I can get them to stay with me,fly in the formation I want & get the correct distance, close or far,but not attack the flights of enemy aircraft directly in front of me,or with Stukas to actually release their bombs on target! Yes its true on some missions they do all on their own..I like this , but seem to have no actul control over this. There is a Air Targets tab in Radio Transmission but I don't really think this works ( I've tried all sorts of combinations.) There is no Ground targets attack commnd so that means I'm out of luck trying to get my pals to strafe a road convoy ot hit AA sites like in IL-2. Has someonde figured this apparent glitch out? It is particularily frustrating in Desastersoft Missions where a kill number may determine whether you get a succesfull mission or have to repeat.
As I said this is driving me crazy!

Hello!
As far as I know, the only way to get your wingmen to attack is to have all the radio options under "air targets" in bright red. This seems to be somehow tied to the flight formation you selected, which should be set to "close", therefore allowing your mates to visually acquire the targets, but I have no proof: it's possible that they won't attack even when an enemy aircraft is on their nose, or shooting at them, or that they will attack without any order.
So, set your formation to "close" and wait for all the options to be bright red if you want to issue the attack order. It's hit and miss, be prepared for more frustration.

one of the desastersoft reps at simhq gave a tip a few months ago on how to get your AI friendlies to behave better, it had something to do with initially ordering them to get close to you, and then issuing the next command (eg, if they are close enough to you, they will then follow your command)

sorry, i cant remember the exact details

is it possible maybe to edit their expert level in the ini file before the flight ? maybe they are all set to rookie and dont know what they are doing :) just a thought !

That's what I meant, and these are the precise instructions provided by Desastersoft.

Order your wingmen to attack enemy aircraft:-

Always remember: You should have sufficient altitude, around 1.000 m respectively 3.000 feet.

After taking off you should close up your ranks a bit.

1. Open your radio menu

2. Choose option 6 - Formation

3. Choose option 2 - Formation – and set it to Close

4. Head to the target area

Once you encounter enemy aircraft you should

1. Open your radio menu.

2. Choose option 5 – Air Targets. There you see five options. As long as option number 5, Attack my target, is dark red you cannot order your wingmen to attack enemy aircraft. Should this be the case close the radio menu again until you see enemy aircraft nearby.

3. If all five options of the Air Targets mode are bright red choose the option you wish to choose. Only when all five options are active you can order attacks by your wingmen.
Should option 5 be inactive you need to assemble your unit again:

1. Open your radio menu

2. Choose option 6 - Formation

3. Choose option 2 - Formation – and set it to Very Close

Should you encounter enemy aircraft you should be able to order attacks on them. The order to attack depends on two key premises: You need to be able to see your opponent and your unit needs to be able carry out the order to attack.

But it won't always work.
About your wingmen's skill level, I've checked in the FMB and it's mostly set to "average", with the exception of section leaders which skill is set to "veteran".
But I haven't tried to edit those yet...

I don't have a problem at all with this, my wingman is always looking for a fight and without my ordering him ...a good subject for my next video :-P

i think luthier in one of his posts refereed to this, and it being one of the reason AI friendlies behaved different in FMB, QMB and campaigns,

i cant remember all the detail but it had to do with adjusting their bravery or novice levels etc.. even with the early problem at release time when the AI friendlies in your flight would constantly crash after you landed, this behavior could be altered by changing their level setting

Yeah, I remember when Luthier spoke about this issue... I might try some changes as soon as I have the time, and report back. Meanwhile, I found out that my IP has been banned from the Desastersoft forum, on this topic http://forum.desastersoft.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1344&sid=46cbf6aa4a9e818c0b35c7b587dd673f (here I'm posting as Picchio)... I don't really understand what was wrong with what I said. It's not like I was going to give away their mission files or anything... I'm confused. My post is still there. Oh well.

Yes you begin by setting them to ace, then tweak them as you make observations of behavior you want to rein in on.

Thanks guys ...have been trying different versions of all of the above , but still heaven't hit the right combination. Have got my group to stay close ,offereing more targets than just me to shoot at , but still no joy getting my guys to fire their guns, Will keep trying,I guess.
