Hi guys,

I would like to know what you think about the future of fps. Where will it go? In the early 2000 years it was all about WW2 (MOH, COD, battlefield, etc.). After some years we went to modern warfare. But what comes next? Battles in the future?
Personally, I am sick and tired of these fights against terrorists in deserts. IMO it would be nice to go back to WW2. I find it much more interessting to fight equal enemys in large scale battles which really happened.

Your thoughts? What would you like in future fps games?

Well, to answer your question about where the developers of first person shooters are going; you're right, into the future. About a week ago Call of Duty Black Ops II was released, and it takes place in 2025... The same goes for Medal of Honor and Battlefield. There's also Crysis, which I think takes place somewhere in the future.

Personally, I don't think there's any interesting games in the Call of Duty series, apart from Call of Duty 1 and United Offensive. Call of Duty 2 was a good game, but, just like the whole MW2/MW3 thing, it was basically the same game with a different storyline and a few new maps. They even copied a few maps from Call of Duty 1, to 2.

The 'modern' thing has basically been milked out by now, and I would've said the same thing about WWII as a theme for first person shooters, back in 2005. We've basically had everything, from WWII to Vietnam, to Afghanisaton, to other modern stuff, and futuristic stuff, except for one thing, which I've always missed... A Call of Duty-like WWI shooter!

Can you imagine what it'd be like? I can't quite, but I really hope we're going back into the past after they milked out the future stuff.

I think we'll see more pay-to-win type stuff, with games as free to play but giving the player the chance to buy better stuff, and/or level up. This is obviously suited to modern and future eras, although as Farber says we see Chivalry and Wars of the Roses which do a similar thing.

There was a Source mod for a WW1 shooter, but it died. I guess it only had niche appeal - no automatic weapons and pretty grim environments.

I think I've heard of that too, yeah. The environment and availible weapons at the time is what appeals to me. I really wonder why there has never been a wellknown first person shooter that takes place in WWI. I personally can't name any heavier ground battle than the battle of Verdun.

I'd quite like to see a well executed WW 1 title as well. Something highly detailed that concentrated on particular sectors of trench warfare. Lots of shelling, MGs, belts of wire, sniping, trench raids, gas, shattered landscapes, smashed trenches, pools of greenish feted water and the grotesque twisted remains of things that were once human beings. If the detailing was well done, I think it could be real winner :):(

Are the dots easier to spot?

One of the best FPS out there is Mount and Blade Napoleonic wars. It's not the graphic that makes this game superb, but the gameplay: more than 100 of players who organize themselves into squads, with commander, using realistic tactics. Almost no 12-year-old kids with skyhigh egos, no cursing, no pointless bashing, etc.

If you want to attract the masses to niche markets there's nothing like a great sound track !

You forgot cowering in the bottom of the trench to avoid shrapnel from local shelling, only to be buried under several yards of mud thrown up when one of those big railway howitzers lands an 18" shell near you :D
