Hey guys!

I'm not sure if the "(s)" in the thread title is warranted, but time will tell, I guess.

The following is a "work in progress" of a desert 109 skin.

Yeah, I know it's not the right scenario, but I like the skin, so here it goes...

http://imageshack.us/a/img40/5010/desertemil01.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img145/217/desertemil02.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img193/2223/desertemil03.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img831/4757/desertemil04.jpg

I'm not going for extreme historical accuracy! The whole thing is based on an incredible CoD-Video (Link) (http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=32856) by FF*Ph0b0s*95. I really loved the 109 skin in the video, but did not find a download link anywhere.
So I decided, I wanted to create something similar. I adjusted some things based on the well known original photo(s) but there's still quite a bit "artistic freedom" involved.

A big "Thanks" to JG26_EZ for his Template and his friendly support!

Additional thanks to Maler, Jutocsa and Cpt. Farrel!

Hope you like it!

Thanks guys! I'm glad you like it!
Unfortunately I don't have time to finalize it at the moment.

If this is Werner Schroers or Fw. Franz Elles Me 109, the spinner is half red and white.

I know its still wip.

Damn.. I had done this skin aswell, but hadn't noticed the spinner either.. (I had done half white, half black)

Now that I have started to look, I am seeing no one is completely sure..

I've seen skins with "half red, half white", "quarter red, white, red, white", "three-quarter red, one quarter white"

Does anyone have a pic or literature to back up which scheme was used..?

PS.. I like your shade of brown better :)

@LcSummers
I experimented with an adjusted (changed black to red), quartered red/white spinner, I borrowed from Cpt. Farrel's Franz von Werra skin, but decided to go with the plain white one instead.
Like I said, the skin is based on the one FF*Ph0b0s*95 used in his video, which I still like very much! And he also used a white spinner.
But I can release it with a bi-colored spinner once it's finished. That won't be a problem.

@JG26_EZ
I stumbled over a screenshot of your skin on your website, while I was already far into the project and I thought: "If I see a download link, I'm gonna kick myself!" :-) After all, I started making this skin, because I couldn't find it anywhere to be downloaded. :grin:
Pretty cool btw, that you tried to copy even the camo pattern correctly!

As for the shade of brown, I can't really take credit for that. I just used the colors of the video. Video-compression might have distorted 'em a bit, but they work well I think.

Thanks for you feedback guys! Appreciate it! :grin:

Doesnt matter at all mate!!

I have some books and plastic kits, there the spinner is red. I only wanted to mention that. I for myself like both versions.:-P

lol Matze. I feel the same way when i decide to start a skin.

I didn't upload it because I took my time finishing it, got distracted and started another (have 3 or 4 "almost ready" skins in this state).

Re: camo markings.. I had found a printable template for painting a model. I took the template, resized it and put it on a transparent layer and then traced it.

JG26_EZ,

i have Schroers/Fw. Franz Elles skin from Tamiya 1/48 Me 109E-4/7 or a book called German Fighterplanes1939-1945 in coloured profiles from Claes Sundin and Christer Bergström. Schroer flew it only a few times, Fw. Franz Elles flew it more often than Schroer. I cant remember where i read or have it.

or have a look over here:

Here's another skin I'm working on:

It's a 109 E-4 flown by Hauptmann Max Dobislav in late spring 1941.

Still a work in progress (mainly general fine tuning and color adjustments)

Love the last pic that you put up of Black 8.

Now, to be a critic :mrgreen:
Acknowledging the fact that the pic I have posted here is done by someone like you or I, years after the war, and isn't necessarily a 100% correct rendition. I think your yellow is a tad brighter than average. Was also wondering what your source for your colour scheme is, as this pic displays the same dude's plane, but with the "top coat" displayed (Brown or Gray and Green) on the top side of the fuselage. Personally, I think skins can look cool without the "top coat", but if you're trying for historical accuracy, then that might change things :)

I'm not yet satisfied with the colors, especially yellow. That's what I meant by "color adjustments" in my previous post. Unfortunately some colors seem to look quite different in game compared to what they look like when I'm working on them.

EZ, criticism is of course wanted and appreciated! My source and reference for the skin is "Wings Of Fame - Vol. 4". I don't have a scan of the page, but the mottling and the top coat in are in fact different from the picture you found on the Internet. The top coat in my book is just dark grey (barely visible in the first two pics, due to lighting) without any shades of brown.

Overall, still quite some adjustments to make!

Heh! I thought I'd throw some criticism in before the post that says you're finished. :)

Re: what you said about the colours...
I had a problem with alot of my colours changing colours (when in game) until I began saving them as a "lossless format" JPEG. Not sure about the saving process in the program that YOU use, but it helped me SO much when i discovered and started to save this way.

Here's the reference picture, I was talking about:

http://imageshack.us/a/img812/2430/dobislav109e4sideview.jpg

(The spinner was too close to the center of the page, that's why it's blurry. But it basically looks the same like in the picture EZ posted)

I use GIMP for skinning and 100% quality, when I export the JPEGs. Haven't found another applicable option setting yet. Thanks for the advice, though!

Thanks LC!

Here's a little progress update:
Added a more blue-ish color tone and adjusted the nose coloring, as well as the camo pattern and some other minor stuff.

Here's how she looks right now. Still working on it ... (not quite happy yet!)

Any progress of Black 8?

I don't want to tease you guys with screenshots and no download links, but during the week, I usually don't have time to continue working on them.

And for those skins the 80-20 rule totally applies. At least for me. Takes me 20% of the time to get 80% of the skin done. But 80% of the time for the remaining 20% (did I ever mention, that the fine tuning is driving me nuts??? :grin:)

@priller26
Once I finally finish some, I'll post a download link here in the forum.

@LcSummers
Black 8 is not gonna change much anymore. I like the way she looks! However, I have difficulties with some parts of the skin and ingame lighting. Some areas are too shiny (same goes for the Dobislav skin), especially when the mission time is set to 12:00. Also since it's my first skin, I get very picky about each little detail, that is not exactly like I want it to be.
