View Full Version : Cornering speeds for CLoD Aircraft?

With this definition:

Cornering Speed: "The lowest air speed at which a fighter can obtain the structural or aerodynamic limiting G force."

In the "dogfight" situation, this is the speed I'm trying to maintain in order to "out-turn" an adversary. It's also the speed above which I must excercise caution to prevent "Over-G" damage. Below this speed I must remain "Stall vigilant.

Is there a central location where the cornering speeds of CLoD aircraft can be found?

I'm in love with the Spitfire MKII, so that would be a good starting point...

Someone recently posted the doghouse plot for a Spit.. or was it a 109? I forget, but I think that is what your looking for.

I'm afraid I've never heard of "Dog House" plot. In the Air Force, we had "V-G" (Velocity-Accelleration) diagrams which may be similar. Although V-G diagrams would be really nice, I only want a general cornering velocity that I can always shoot for when the enemy is after me. I'm a big believer in KISS...(Keep it simple, stupid).

A rose by any other name! ;)

Sad thing is

This kind of testing (turn rates) was not part of the formal testing (read typical testing) during WWII.

That is to say you may find a few real world data test repots on a few planes but not all. :(

I do have these graphs for the IL-2 1946 planes here

http://www.flightsimtesting.com

Problem is right now I am updating my website for CoD, so many of the IL-2 planes (aka the data base) are not loaded right now. When fully loaded there are some 600+ planes listed

Dog house or Fan plot. Here is one for the BF109E3 cv Spit I. Zero Climb line represents Sustained perf (Ps=0)

In the end the subject of corner speeds in COD is rather moot since Structural G is not modelled so in effect the limiting values are either Lift limit into Black out threshold.

That really needs to be fixed.
