Tonight in central Munich an American bomb from ww2 was brought to explosion after disarming has failed.

Video of explosion is in the following link.

Interesting points:

The short dry sound and the time delay.

http://vimeo.com/48399328

EDIT: For interested parties: It was a 250 kg bomb with delayed delay fuse conceived to explode several hours after impact in order to interrupt the work of firefighters and rescue workers. Their fuse was constructed in a way to prevent disarming it.

EDITED IN ORDER TO NOT OFFEND ANY FUSE.

The USAAF dropped 3,089,916 500lb bombs vs Germany.

.
Poor:wink: Germany but;
Total U.S. bomb tonnage dropped during:
World War II = 2,057,244 tons
Vietnam War = 7,078,032 tons (3-1/2 times WWII
tonnage)
War is hell.
In Belgium and North of France every an each year tons of ammunition of the first invasion (1914-1918.) of Belgium by Germany are still found live and dangerous sometimes with chemicals and of both sides. From time to time in large quantities.

but all were dropped on cities, while the others were dropped somewhere in the jungle.

Ironically, on the same day another unexploded ordnance was found - in Warsaw, on construction site of a metro line. This was a "bit" bigger example however - 600 mm shell from "Karl" mortar (don't know whether it was the 2-ton or 1,7-ton one). Fortunately we didn't have to do similar fireworks show in the middle of our city! Bomb disposal guys managed to get it out of here.

Cheers.

Glad to hear that this thing could be removed without harm or damages.

I guess they dig up several of them everyday all over Europe ...

I'd say 67+ year delay is a little over the top for a delay fuse.

And its only 250kg .... dam

Actually it was 226.8 kg as the found Bomb was a US 500lbs General Purpose.
I think that was one of the most used Bombs at those Missions, as they are the most found ones at least around Bavarian Cities like Munich, Nürnberg and Augsburg.

That is very interesting. How far did they move before they blew it up? There must be so many more like this scattered around.

Why would you bother blowing the thing up? They should have just used a "Safety Bucket(TM)" like they do in PNG!

Apparently it renders them perfectly safe!

I read they put sand and hay on top of it. The hay caught fire and landed on surrounding roofs causing some damage...

Who would put hay on an explosive device about to go off...

A half ton of highly pressed hay dampens the Explosion blast, it's common practice when you blow them up with a semptex razor.

Nevertheless intresting Bomb they found, i'v never heard of an US 500lbs General Purpose Bomb with an No. 37 Long Delay Tail pistol which was normally used by Bomber Command.
Now the explosion makes sense with those No.37 Pistol and their Anti handling device, because normally when you blew the Bomb shell open with an Shaped charge it makes not such a big "boom"

That's how it usually works:

I was wondering about all the cinders raining down from the smoke cloud. So, hay, eh?

Some pictures after the event:

http://www.sueddeutsche.de/muenchen/bombenfund-in-schwabing-weltkriegs-blindgaenger-kontrolliert-gesprengt-1.1452853

Even a metal grating was bent through the explosion.

Some shops burnt down, many windows smashed. Experts for buildings now examine the houses in terms of stability before their inhabitants can return to their homes.

I just wonder why they did not use water soaked hay.

In Oranienburg (Germany) 2 other bombs were today disarmed.

On of them (an american partly detonated bomb) had to be brought to explosion.

And there are still 350 bombs left.

???, I think your a bit confused my friend, or maybe you haven't taken your medication today.
We are talking about WWII unexploded ordnance from 70 years ago, not something recent. Even so, Germany started the war so any blame lies with their government at the time, and there is still German ordnance found in the UK from time to time, as I'm sure there is in many other places in Europe, as they were bombing and shelling the hell out of it long before the Americans ever got there. I have no doubt there is also live British ordnance found in Europe as we were bombing it long before the Americans as well. So lets all start suing each other shall we? or maybe we should start WWIII over unexploded ordnance!

thats nothing....
last week a WWII bomb exploded in vienna right in the danube.nobody had a glue it even existed.
when it exploded, i was about 500meters away at a friends house on the balcony.the whole 5story building was shaking, but no damage fortunately...
this could have had a bitter ending as well, as in this erea, the danube is pretty populated with merchant ships and also touristic ones. besides it was a sunny day, and many people went out to seize the nice weather before autumn comes....somebody even made a photo of the explosion and a water fountain rising about 20meters above the water surface...

It's curious to see German firemen using still the same WW2 stahlhelm pattern for their headgear! :)

Windows brake due to the pressure wave, right? Why not tell the building tenants to leave their windows open...

Oh I remember, because there will be burning hay flying all over the place.

thanks,

That's just insane, with all the finds in Europe with old WWII and WWI explosives. Even a few years ago here, in local So Calif, they've found Naval ordinance . . . from eras ago . . .

My friends from Vietnam and Laos still say their home villages find old US and Soviet ordnance (more US though).

How kewl lucky you! Wish I could have seen and
felt that.

Would not want to have seen / or felt a bomb going off near me, unless I wanted to see my maker early and I'm enjoying life right now :D

Just ask anyone who's done time in EOD.
