I decided to try out a different flight sim tonight. It's the latest thing out but I can't say what it is. After finally working out how to start it I settled in for a flight. :?
I couldn't believe how significantly different this 'thing' was to COD. It was like flying a cartoon. After only a short time I exited the game, and yes I felt dirty. :?:?
I now have a new found calmness over the waiting period for those problems surrounding this magnificent sim. It annoyed me that there over a thousand people flying the other piece of crap, but I think it was because they had coop type missions available, and a crappy arcade option catering for 12 year olds.
The mob that created the other sim have been bleating how good theirs is but it holds nothing next to our sim. Anyway, I will wash myself clean by never again doubting that this 'is' the best sim available, and I just need to be a bit more patient waiting for things to be fully fixed.
A nightmare scenario would be this sim failing and we're left with those other things, they call sims, as the only alternative. :(
Now deleting that 7G of junk off my PC.

I tried one too. The one i tried had thousands of players also. It looked 10 times better than cliffs and ran at least 20 times better on all maxed settings.
FMs arent perfect there but its still a betaproduct. And looking at the porked FMs in CloD (Bombers that fall on their nose without bombload and stuff) I find there not much of a diffrence.
Clouds look amazing over there and flying trough them makes water flow over your windshield. If you look into the closest details youll find more in Cliffs. DM is bettter in cliffs too. But we´ll see what we´ve got left when the devs here are done stripping the game of features to make it seem look optimzed.
Hopefully CloD devs do something. Since if they dont EVERYONE will walk the other way-

Speak for yourself. There's really no other way to walk. Il2-CloD is the best there is right now, warts and all. If they released the sequel in this state I would pay the $50.
I play this online and it's a hoot. Offline there's a lot left to be done. Lack of comms and AI behavior keep me online for now.

Why do you people always make it a case of 'either/or'? Honestly, this is how flame wars start.
You can happily have both on your HD. I welcome a quantity of games in this genre, no matter which audience they cater for. With all due respect, CloD's current audience appear as naive as some of the children being flamed here.
Hopefully CloD will continue to improve, with the lost features added back, and new ones included to keep me interested.

Lets just hope it stays like that, we have a choice..I'd certainly hate being made to play something else I didn't really like just because its the only half decent ww2 Sim out there

Yes, Clod is the best in the genre atm but that's only because of the poor state of the genre. I mean, how many WW2 air combat games (no, the arcadey ones doesn't count) has been released the last few years? How can you be anything but the best if there is no competition? lol!:-P CloD is the best, worst and most mediocre all at the same time.
P.S Also, Clod is relatively more realistic than these up and coming games but compared to real sims it is not. Still, CloD has the best balance when it comes to realism contra gameplay which makes it rewarding although the CEM is almost as simplistic as old IL-2.

Are we adults or not? How is it not possible to enjoy other flight sim games?
I own many flight sim games, enjoy flying all of them, and yes, the feeling of flight and control is obviously different in each game, but they are great to fly and enjoy non the less...
Loosen up, and grow up some of you for god's sake.. and ed is correct, this is exactly how a thread turns into a flame war.

I agree clod can be and will be awsome offline one day,so i switch between clod and Rise of flight atm a sim which is nearly perfect, just odd crash now and then.
Still blow the dust off IL2 1946 now and then too.:-)

I tried the "beta thing" too.
It's a really cool air combat GAME, with some nice options to add more "simulation".
Great visuals, performance and playability. Easy controls configuration too.
It's more "Battlefield" approach. IL-2 Cliffs Of Dover is another thing.
In terms of presentation is much better than CloD, and it's a "finished" product, even in beta stage. Nice piece of software.
But the "beta thing" is really nice! ;)

I just dug out all my old COD updates going back to the 1st patch.
I ran blackdeath and a quick dog fight on all of them noting particular points and graphical qualities.
Wow it really has come a long way. Graphics, Smoothness and oh... the sounds we now take for granted! I think they've made the right compromises to get to where we are now. Only a few more graphics to add back in and maybe another lighting change as I quite liked the better contrast in the earlier patches but the cartoon colours were'nt quite right, but I think they've probably washed them out too far the other way now. Aircraft visibility was better in the first couple of patches and then it went down hill until the latest patch. I still think they need to work on the washed out colours and general hazy look of the game but it really is miles and miles better than it was at release.
It still has some way to go, but I dont think any other WWII flight games will ever challenge it for the game play vs simulation vs graphics balance it has achieved, even if it didnt get much better than it is now.
I dont want COD to become a kiddies Air-Quake but I would love to get some more players online! ;) Maybe after a few people try out the other new games they will realise just how good COD actually is.
Anyway as Ive said before, I think these other arcade/sim games will have their market and serve it well. For a lot of us hard core simmers though, I just dont see them challenging the depth of COD modelling, that goes for FM, DM and general graphical details. But they will still be wildly successful just the same, and good luck to them. They cater to a different crowd. :) (PS...and when they get bored of it they can come join us!) ;)

There isnt any other WWII sims in the works that I know of, there is a couple of WWII fighter MMO's one is a little more simish than the other... they are what they are, I will probably have both installed when they are released for some mindless fun, but when I want to fly a WWII sim I will be back in the cockpit of COD.

most probably.. Warthunder.. which is also way better than IL2CoD in almost every aspect excepting realism/flight model and cockpit interiors, which is better in CoD.
kind of a small trade in exchange for having a real feeling of flying in a real war, not in a deserted Europe sky.. I've learned more about energy states and situation awareness in the few beta days I've played than in all the months after IL2CoD release

Lol dear oh dear... reminds me of Modern Warfare vs Arma 2 I know which is "real" and it's not the former. Just because you are in a small map and forced into a quick battle doesn't make it in anyway realistic, flying around in a group and stumbling into an enemy group or via radar... Now that's a "real" ww2 flight sim.. I CANNOT wait for a good rolling front online campaign :D

For someone who plays farmville the whole day long and likes even dog poop more than CloD you spend good amount of time on these forums.
In case you did not notice before: in your browser you're actually able to visit other URL's than the 1c CloD forums.
As for one of the other games, the one without thunder. I played it when the beta started and I was surprised how crappy flying can be. For them it's not about flying - it's about making money and selling simple arcade shooters with a unique setting. On top of everything it's not even about skills - it's only about money and grind time invested.
If you want a great duel, aim, awareness and tactics battle go for quake, unreal, quakelive or whatever. But wait, most people don't even come close to the skills required and rather invest in gold ammo and premium accounts just to be able to play with friends and get an xp boost.
As for the games themselves - I'm not even sure if it's worth to talk about them at all. They're not what we like - rather they're something completely unrelated to simming or flying. There are worlds between the games and in some aspects they're better, equal or worse. It's more a matter of taste. Sadly the dumbed down gameplay these days affects the sim community a lot. Everyone is expected to abide by the rules of "even monkeys need to be able to play it" - provide mouse or gamepad support. Joysticks? Real aircraft controls? What monkey can't handle isn't necessary anymore.

The other beta is OK, some good points, some not so good. It will be interesting to see how both play out when relatively finished. In the end I will spend most of my time flying the better one, which is still quite unclear. Right now my money would be on the new IL-2 series providing a better simulation if finished, but the question is, how long will the new IL-2 series beancounters patience last. My guess at the moment, would be, that people who enjoy quick furbal type missions will gravitate to the other sim while those that prefer more complex missions and organized online wars will gravitate to the new IL-2 series. For the moment I wil enjoy what the other has to offer now, while waiting to see how the more detailed and complex IL-2 series development plays out.

Thats the beauty of the COD map and future maps. You can choose to fly quick furbal missions over Hawkinge, Calais, or even deep penetration missions as far as London, and always have a home field to land at. The other map may still only include Manston, Hawkinge, and Canterbury, which is adequate for furbals, but totally useless for most complex missions.

You really have to start a thread about this to comfort yourself? Currently COD bores me to death and DCS World stutters like hell on my pc. My stick makes planes all wobbly in ROF. I fire up Black Shark 1 from time to time but since it has no mission generator I guess I kinda did all in full realism.
So what's left for me? Fire up one of those freemium games? If so, what's wrong with that?
All of those softwares are games. Even DCS which is a monster of a game that takes months to get right (especially the chopper) is just a game. You're not more brilliant if you like it harder or dumber if you like it more straightforward.
If realism is what you are looking for why aren't you all on steelbeasts?
It's like ice cream, if you stuff your face with chocolate you're not less a pig than the guy who goes vanilla.

Btw. I tried some dogfights in "simulator" setting in Warthunder yesterday. And despite the fact that the stalls werent as violent as in cliffs it didnt feel all that diffrent... Sound is not as good but that gets compensated by the graphics:)
Acrace mode on the other hand sucks. Its dominated by people that pla with mouse in 3rd person view (much easier to aim this way) and people that own the biggest bombers and decide the map in a matter of minutes. Hopefully this will be changed once there is some sort of matchmaking option ingame.

Agreed.
There are shortcomings with the other one as there are shortcomings with CoD. The other one is far nicer graphics and more dramatic. Arcade sucks but you don't have to play it just like you don't have to turn on anti epilepsy or easy mode in CoD.
Bottom line is that in beta the other one is far better running software than CoD will be in 6 months from now. So you will have a choice,
Unfinished broken software with some aspects of more realism and larger maps or smooth running better looking graphics with smaller but more varied and more numerous maps, a pretty good simulator mode and an arcade mode you won't and don't need to play like you don't play CoD on easy mode.
People will either play both or line up in there respective corners and hurl insults at each other for choosing the wrong one. That part is happening already, even from people who have not even flown the other one.
Personally I like some things about both and hate some things about both. The first one to erase the most hates wins in my book.

It really looks amazing. Even on midrange rigs it runs great. If you look into the details youll see that clod has more of them. But when do you have the time to look for details in a dogfight?
Also my personal opinion on the coulds is that the ones in warthunder look better. They are somewhat fuzzy but they are MONUMENTAL as they should be. Not just small dots. Also when you fly through them their water flows over wwulr canopy wich simply looks great.
Its free to play. So everyone should at least consider applying to beta and see for themselves.
BIG WARNING. Consider arcade mode only for your leveling. Simulatorsetting without icons would be the way to fly it to get a simmish experience.

No it doesn't do it justice IMO. Some of the screenies and videos are alphas. I have seen much nicer stuff than that. Graphics are subjective, but there is no doubt that sim has nice graphics and it runs smooth as silk. Also there sheer variety of dramatic landscapes offered is pretty nice. South Pacific, Africa, England, France Berlin Russia......No flickering shadows, no shimmering and AA and AF all work well.
Some aspects of CoD graphics are better, some not. High up on a clear day in CoD is better. CoD has some things better the other does too. Some areas/maps are rendered better than others in both sims. One thing for sure the graphics run WAY better than CoD.
I bombed a factory in a Mustang yesterday and the detail was amazing nothing like it in CoD. However, I have seen some graphics that CoD does better. No clear winner here IMO. It will come down to taste I'm afraid and whether CoD can fix its graphics problems.
Perhaps you will like CoD better in every way, but for me it is a toss up for a variety reasons. Stability is part of it.
I will play both. CoD for the DM and FM, the other for the dramatic and diverse scenery and variety of scenarios.

I have no problem with playing two games I really don't see the point in setting up camp in one spot when you have two tents ;)
I have to say that my experience with f2p games like wot (which btw IS a steaming pile of dung) is what is turning me off this game. From what I have read and heard of these "f2p" aka "pay to win" games you can quickly blow a whole wad of cash, I almost did in wot and won't be burnt again...

-- Butch Cassidy in "Butch Cassidy and The Sunshine Kid" -- opening scene
BTW, I never knew this until recently, the gambler that got divested of his gunbelt by The Kid's .44-40 slugs was none other than Sam Elliott....before he got famous and grew his trademark mustache.
War Thunder has a Malta map, Feather_IV? Very cool!

Awesome :D
I know your feeling for a while cod wasn't running well for me until xfire started to work.
I still don't see from the pics why the landscape looks better in thunder.
For me the whole small map thing is a problem even though I am a fighter pilot I really enjoy the long mission escorting or doing a bombing run. When Cod finially gets a map that lends itself well to a rolling online war I will be a happy man :D and those that wonder why we have such large maps will understand why ;)
P.s. Please could you check the speed in war thunder for me, I am just wondering if they might have tried to circumvent the large maps by reducing the speed of the aicraft. Similar to what they do in bf3 for example i.e. jets going the speed of a biplane ;)
