Great 109 Book

I stopped by the FHC museum in Everett today to hang out with my aluminum skinned "friends" and picked up a really neat book on the 109. It is the Haynes Owners Manual for the 109.

I have tons of 109 books going ad-nauseum into production figures, rustatz kits, camo schemes, a bump here and a hole there..primarily for model builders.

This one is a great refernce especially for SIM builders. Great pilot notes, exhaustive controls details and flight operation. I notice many things the boyz at 1C should read, like the taxi take off and landing characteristics, and discrepancies such as a considerable speed difference in landing the E model (I can't land a CoD E4 at 160 Km/h), temperature management and others. Also the leading edge slot deployment is not right in CoD.
BTW for you reds there were Spit and Hurri owners manuals that are probably just as good.

Ive got that book. I was a little disapointed it wasnt like a real Haines manual. Would have been nice if it went through servicing or how an engine was changed just like a regular haines book. It became more about the people around the aircraft (Black 6) than the aircraft for me. It wasn't a bad book though.

Yea but I was being polite about it. Although it does tell you allot about the restoration of B6 which is actually what the books really about.

Nope, they're nothing like the car manuals with their step-by step disassembly and reassembly, and I too was a little disappointed because there are better technical books on the 109. However, as SKUD has mentioned, there is some interesting, unbiased info on 109 handling characteristics.

I also have the Dam Buster's Manual (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dam-Buster-Manual-technology-Nazi-occupied/dp/0857330152) which is an interesting guide to the weapons and tactics used by 617 Sqn during WW2.

It's still quite a generic read I think, but a nice diversion nonetheless.

For a good read on the Bf109, get a copy of Black 6, the story of the restoration of the RAF Bf109, it's a fascinating read and a very precious inside in the technical peculiarities of the 109.

I know what you mean. I guess having thumbed through it before I bought I knew what to expect. I have Haynes manuals for my Bultaco Pursangs that are 300 pages and I figure to get that kind of detail on a 109 would take 5000 pages. But then again you would be getting a deal at $459 a copy:grin:
