Ive long since wondered this and have tried to search online for the answer a few times.

How fast do bombers travel?? In the FMB the default value for everything is 300kmh. I doubt very much that every flew about at 300. So does anyone know what kind of speeds He111's, Ju88's, Dornier 17's and Blenhiems cruised around in formation at?

I know the STUKA are pretty slow and generally were not going more than 250 - 300. Anyone got any refrences?

the Ju88 pilots notes translation i've got gives cruise speed at 300m as 350km/h
rising to 400km/h at 4000m. These speeds appear to be TAS which gives an ias of ~320/330 respectively. (cruise settings given are 1/15 ATA, 2250 rpm)

The ingame speed setting appears to be IAS as to retain formation between groups at different height different speeds need to be set (~3km/h drop per 100m of height difference).

Personally i think using these speeds is a little fast to enable a human pilot to maintain formation with ai so i drop the speed a little:- around 280-300km/h for Ju88, 260-270km/h for Do17 and He111 and ~250km/h for Ju87 for flights at ~3000m- very empirical but seems to work out fairly well for offline missions

Very informative, Thanks!

Surley the Do17 is one of the faster bombers? Also do were the He111's that slow?

well the Ju88 was a 'schnell bomber' (sp?) and was meant to be faster than the Do/He (by around 30km/h iirc).
I agree the speeds i use are a little slow but i think most planes are a little slow and these speeds allow formation keeping without blowing engines and give me reasonable results in mission building.

Ju88 manual is in this little collection of pilot's notes

Ju88 cruising speed from a quik reference was 239mph/384kph.

In game I can get my Ju88 to 360kph cruise IAS.

Here is a link to the Ju88 Pilots notes with out a login or rar file.
