yeah this IS arma, or at least its Engine. I hope they have possibly made some changes to the animation system that ARMA uses. That is by far the worst part of the game. Well that and that god forsaken use menu lol. The models look good and there are even some aircraft! I'LL pick this one up for sure.

I have been waiting for this one :) Finally a WW2 tank game! Last one that was good was Panzer Elite ages ago. If this Iron Front is more like a sim then good bye World Of Tanks and it's arcade! Planes in it..forget it! Time to roll some heavy steel!

The more I read the more I want it :) Seems the devs of this one have really put time into it :) Hopefully the vehicles are more sim than arcade. Airplanes I do not care of, ARMA engine is not known for it's accurate FM modelling.

Well, it looks like a really cool FPS. I'm liking RO Heros of Stalingrad, but we have never been given much in the way of German Paras except for one of the the call of duty or MOH series way back, even then, they were a small part of the battle, and you couldn't play them in online. This looks very promising. Oh, to boot, the trees dont shimmer and shake.

Definite buy.
LibMod guys did alot of nice addons in the early days so the kind of deserve getting payed this time.
Building some warfare/CTI for this will be fun (unless they've cut off the script ability from standard arma).

I've had my eye on this for quite a while now, nice to see that it's finally going to see the light of day! As some have said, I hope it keeps the scripting abilities of ARMA in it though, since I loved the ability to record the path of a unit to play it back later. If they've kept it in this it means I can go up in a 190, buzz the countryside at treetop height, then replay the path with me as a soldier on the ground and enjoy the sights/sounds. Can't wait either way!

Dont forget the engine will be outdated later in the year when A3 comes out anyway.

Didnt know Arma2 was even being modded, shows you I've been spending a bit too much time following one other game...wink. I will pay for this game, its right up my alley, and it appears that since the user modded and I assume free Arma2 works, best bet is the retail release will as well, that is how RO Heros of Stalingrad started out, a mod of the Unreal engine. This looks fantastic to me, thanks for the outstanding Friday update! May is close, and so is summer accounting for a possible delay. Happy camper!

but since its Iron Front Liberation II / Arma II engine, they can get away with it.

Wrong assumption.
I do mod, as a creator, not only end-user.
As such, I realize what an insane amount of time these guys have put into this.
I have absolutely no issues at all paying for this as I played LibMod alot before when it was "just a free mod" and know they know their stuff around.
I guess you really don't value the work of all the mod-makers in Armaland?
Nothing wrong with that of course but maybe you should try mod something?

I'm an Arma modder too, i mod for my clan not the public. I would never charge money for my mods, also check out the screens its even on Chernarus.
Its not the modding I dissagree with or the hard work thats gone into making it quite the contrary, its the money aspect especially if its full wack game price.

That's sort of how I imagined Battlefield 1943 to be (but with frostbite, not frostbite 2). Unfortunately they never got round to releasing that on PC though, only for consoles, which was extremely frustrating and I never really understood why they didn't release it
Back on (sort of) topic though, i44 is amazing! Does anyone know how to make B17's drop thier bombs in the editor though? If give them a destroy waypoint they fly very low over the target trying to strafe it, then crash.

not bad at all. going by the comments in the Video it is a ressource hog, though, so I am curious how it will work out.
What I really love is the how they created the landscape, that does look as central european as it can get.
Great, Arma engine and WW2 just work well together, even better then a modern scenario given their avionic limitations. I think I'll get it.

I'd say it is something between a FPS and an Infrantry Simulator. Rumors says it is used by some militaries to train their soldiers. Maps are huge by any FPS standart, encompassing whole regions or Islands.

Those Iron Front videos look really good, but in some places AI really dissapointed a bit. Like a Panther sitting still showing it's side or rear to a T34-85 or similar. And in the 2nd video AI was driving around like a gaggle of headless chickens. But I guess the final release might be a bit different. Anyways beats World Of Rus...Tanks ;)

Panther..damn it looks good and was a good tank. KwK 75 L/70 high velocity gun, sloped armor etc. I wish Iron Front could be more like a sim than a shooter as there is no WW2 tank sim out there. And no, World of Tanks is not a sim, just an arcade joke :)

Hey there fellow pilots,
If you want to know more about this game, then this is your chance:
I've been offered the possibilty to interview Patelaros Vasileios (aka "Panzer_Baron"), Art Director of the Iron Front team. This interview was mainly supposed to be an alternative to the interview being done by ofpec.com (http://www.ofpec.com/intel_depot/index.php?action=read_on&id=566#details), an ArmA/OFP community site, and a chance for the Red Orchestra community to ask their questions, which may differ from the stuff that the ArmA/OFP community wants to know.
But since you guys seem to be interested in the game, too, I also ask you to send me any questions you have concerning Iron Front via PM or just post them here, so I can answer the ones that have already been answered in the official forums.
Best regards,
No0dle

Many thanks for the opportunity.
Questions:
Release date?
Will they correct aircraft 3D models before release? Some proportions are very wrong and cockpits have very low details even for an arcade 2012 game. Tank models have more correct proportions than aircraft ones. It is a big immersion killer for a not-fictional WWII game.
Will it have latest ArmA2 netcode version (v.1.60 patch IIRC)?
Can they integrate the Warfare game mode (from A2) in stock game?
When they plan to move to ArmA3 engine?
What multiplayer modes are available in stock game? Any PvP AAS, A&D, etc. missions included?
Thank you. Could you please post a link to your interview when it is done.

A couple questions, surely asked but anyway :)
1) How well are the tank guns been modelled, for example the high velocity German guns, reload times and so forth.
2) Will there be extra tanks like StuG III/IV and of course Russian counterparts added later?
Looks very interesting and that Panther looks so damn nice!

Some friends of mine have the non-Steam version of Arma2 and the Steam version of Arma2OA.
Many mods require them both, and usually the free Mod-managers can manage the paths to both the version.
We are using Six-Updater (http://www.six-updater.net/p/download.html) and it has this feature, so there should be no problem.

Iam playing a lot ArmA/OA .... do yourself a favour and purchase it via a physical copy or an official Download. Me m8s I am playing with is are bunch of mixed Installations, the default one do an easier life.Steam is fine, but the mod management can be a bit tricky and is always a thing for its own.
I am sure there will be controverse voices, but you are doing a lot easier with a default installation.

No it does not. Since the very beginning of Liberation 41, which was the first mod of the Developing Team ( now Iron Front)in Operation Flashpoint (the original in 2002), they introduced their own armor management and DM. You can check the DM and the pentrtion in some of the videos on youtube ("playing Iron front part 1- 5" or sth like that).
Do not expect a tank combat simulation, like T34vsTiger should have become, as ArmA2 is a military Sim,but mainly adapted for infantry battles. Similar to flying in ArmA2...it works,it does its job and looks good, but you cant compare it with Il2 flying of course. Thus I recommend everyone who never played Arma2 to dowload "Arma2 for free (http://www.arma2.com/free)", to chekc if the gameplay is suitable for one.At the end it is more a simulation than a shooter. More nights on our server, where i fired just one round, and did most in pathfinding etc., just as example.

Story:
Iron Front – Liberation 1944 is set in Southern Poland during the Soviet Offensive in the summer of that year, when the infantry and tank as well as aircraft units of the Red Army and the Wehrmacht engaged in fierce combat. It was the first time in history that the "Königstiger" tanks fought with the powerful JS2 soviet tanks.
The Germans’ objective is clear – consolidate and regroup the remaining troops, stop the Red Army’s advance at all cost, or at least slow it down. As a Red Army soldier, the task less complex, but no less challenging: Break the resistance to enable an attack on Germany. Starting out as a simple soldier on either side, you will experience nerve-wracking, tactical combat – always caught between your orders from your senior, and reality on the battlefield. In the course of the story, both protagonists will be promoted to command tanks and even fighter planes in addition to their own troops. However, the player does not have to do all this on foot: Using their computers, tacticians will control tanks, including the famous German battle tank Panzerkampfwagen VI or "Königstiger" and the Russian Stalin tank JS2, or fighter planes such as the Focke Wulf 190 and dive bombers like the Stuka or the Petlyakov PE-2.
Online is where the battle really heats up in "Iron Front – Liberation 1944": Players can either complete missions cooperatively or compete with each other in special multiplayer modes such as "Capture the Flag" or "Attack and Defense". "Iron Front – Liberation 1944" also includes an extensive mission editor, enabling players to intuitively create their own missions and share them with their friends online, thus guaranteeing that there will never be a shortage of new missions.

It is rather infantry tactical simulator. Tanks and aircraft are arcade but better than BF3 IMO.

Also, it's nice to have a video with English commentary too! The subtitles were fine, but then I find I spend more time reading them than actually watching the video, which is probably why I'm so surprised by how polished it looks :D

For about one week the Red Orchestra and Il-2 communities had been given the chance to send in their questions concerning Iron Front: Liberation 1944. The following Q&A with Patelaros Vasileios (aka Panzer_Baron), Art Director of the Iron Front team, is the result.
http://www.abload.de/img/arty_1q0l5e.jpg
Q: Could you tell us a little bit about what an Art Director does and what your tasks in the Iron Front development are?
A: In various companies the work of Art Director is always different. In AWAR, my main task is the overview of the design part, but I also do a lot of modeling, texturing, training of the young ones in our company and other organizing, executive work. I should say, that almost every primary worker in our company has a wide spectrum of tasks and abilities.
Q: Who are the developers behind Iron Front?
A: When it all was just starting, Sarmat had a part of its team working on “Liberation 1941-45” mod for ArmA2. It was not certain at that moment if there would be an end-product – it was slow work without any responsibilities or terms. But we had a hope to make a contract with an investor and BIS to lease the engine, and our hopes came true. The main part of Sarmat transformed to form AWAR and X1 software is the company which works around the marketing, agreements and other business stuff.
Q: Iron Front: Liberation 1944 began as a modfication for ArmA2 and then became a full-blown game. This has caused confusion in the community, some think it’s a mod and others a new release. Can you summarize the main differences between ArmA2 and Iron Front and highlight what makes Iron Front unique?
A: Yes, I have read some of such comments like „pfff, just another mod for arma2, there are a lot of other good mod of ww2 out there, and they are for free!“. But they forget that:
1) Iron Front as a commercial product, offers high quality models, properly working features, complete systems and sets. It’s not a bunch of a few models and half-working features, it’s a complete product.
2) The primary features of Iron Front are unique - the damage systems, the artillery systems, the vehicle systems.
3) The gameplay itself differs a lot. The settings of the whole weaponary makes the game different – there is no more „hit that tank anywhere with some rpg or javellin to destroy it“, there are no more guided rockets, no more long-distance shooting weapons, no more guided bombs. The aviation combat is different than in ArmA2 too.
Here follows a list of some of the most important unique features:
- Advanced, totally reworked tank system
- Working sights and scopes
- Breakable vehicles
- Completely different way of communication (no radio for every soldier like in arma2)
- Artillery towing by vehicles
- Artillery pushing by infantry
- New gametypes in multiplayer
As far as I know, that there is no game or mod around featuring all those features in a single package.
There are several other small, not really unique features and goodies (that were not in ArmA), like looking through binoculars when you are looking from the open hatch of your tank, helmets that fall of the heads, adjustable iron sights on machine-guns, mounting machine-guns and so on.
Among the models and the features, there are 4 unique maps, with a summer environment that is well-presented, very detailed and extensive. With over a hundred various new buildings, 98% of them are usable, you can enter inside them. Of course, they are all destructable. The size of maps differ from extremly big to very small, for all tastes. There are also several historical buildings, copying the real ones (Ratusha, Baranow Castle, St Bartolomeus Kostel, Sinagogue etc).
All in all, Iron Front really offers a different, complete game – totally new environment, new settings, new features, and all that in high, professional quality.
Q: What are your post-release plans? Will you continue to release patches in the long term and release additional content (DLCs? Add-Ons?)?
A: The post-release plans depend on the sales. But all in all, there are planned patches and DLC.
Q: Bohemia Interactive is constantly updating the ArmA2 engine, will these improvements also find their way into Iron Front after the release?
A: Yes, Iron Front will continue to receive the same patches as ArmA2, but of course, with the additional special features and corrections for our game.
http://www.abload.de/img/pe_2o9zw3.jpg
Q: What does Iron Front have to offer the PvP crowd? Please confirm which PvP gamemodes and how many PvP missions the release will contain.
A: The main PvP gametypes are the Blitzkrieg, the TDM Tank Battle, the Air Superiority, the Capture and Hold, the Deathmatch, the Capture the Flag.
All in all, it features close to 30 missions, most of them Blitzkrieg ones.
Q: Can you give us a short overview of what tasks the player has to accomplish in each of the gamemodes?
A: In TDM Tank Battle two teams, armed only with various types of tanks, try to exterminate each other or to capture the opposite base. It’s a „TANKS ONLY“ gametype, actually.
In TDM Air Superiority two teams engage in air combat, trying to shot the enemy aircrafts and to bomb the ground targets of the enemy. It’s an „AIRCRAFTS ONLY“ gametype
In Blitzkrieg there is one attacking and one defending team. The attackers have to progress, capturing sector by sector. The number of such sectors is various in different missions. That special gametype is very interesting – it’s really close the the gameplay setting of the Battlefield games – same standards, same AI of bots (if they are enabled on the server). As far as I know, there is preparation for a special video, demonstrating that certain gametype.
In the classical Capture and Hold, well, I think everybody knows about those gametype =)
And of course, there is Deathmatch, a free-for-all, small, killing gametype.
More missions of other gametypes will come in various patches. It’s possible that the best missions, created by community, could be included in official patches too with the agreement of their authors, of course.
Q: Which of the gamemodes do you think are suitable for competitive gaming and what else has Iron Front to offer the clan scene?
A: Well, personally I am not much of competition gameplayer, but I personally like to challenge someone in a serious tank battle. Sometimes a serious tank vs tank challenge can take a lot of time and nerves, when the two opponents are both skilled and know the strong and weak sides of their combat machines.
Also, I think that Blitzkrieg gametype is pretty good for competition. That gametype, by my personal opinion, is perfect for proper teamwork.
Q: Beside the PvP gamemodes, what other gamemodes are included in the game?
A: Several of our multiplayer gametypes, like Blitzkrieg, Tank Battle are also able to be played with bots if the host of the server will prefer it in the settings, so it’s not instantly a PvP gametype.
And of course, there is the classical Cooperative gametype, featuring a team of players trying to accomplish tasks, fighting against AI.
Q: The ArmA2 multiplayer is anything but beginner friendly. Did you make any changes to make the multiplayer more accessible?
A: Of course. We had many discussions around it and as a result, we created some missions that are simple for the beginners too. They are small, with small distances, simple equipment and simple tasks, so they will not have the only option to join a big battle where there is a total hell. They will be able to start from rookie and continue to more hard and serious. The beginners will not get lost in a wide terrain, they will have a clear view where to go, what to do. It’s mostly in the Blitzkrieg gametype.
Q: What does Iron Front has to offer in terms of anti-cheat protection?
A: That’s a serious situation and we are still working on it.
Q: The editor included in ArmA2 is very popular. Will Iron Front be modable in the same ways ArmA2 is and will the community be able to convert missions, mods and gamemodes from ArmA2 to Iron Front?
A: Yes, the editor is mostly the same. Hypotheticaly, conversion of mods from ArmA2 to Iron Front is possible, not sure that it’s quite simple, though.
http://www.abload.de/img/__1j3ayi.jpg
Q: Will the ArmA2 editing tools be usable for Iron Front and if not: will there be specific Iron Front editing tools?
A: Yes, the Arma2 tools will be usable, but in a different way. The detailed information will come after the release.
Q: Speaking of modding: ACE and ACRE are two very popular ArmA2 mods and a lot of people have asked, whether they will be converted to Iron Front. Can you confirm this or alternatively, provide a better understanding of whether or not they are still necessary?
A: Well, I think that this question should be adressed to the modders who created ACE and ACRE. Personally, I would like to see them in Iron Front too.
Q: Will weapon mounting be available for all weapons or just for MGs?
A: At the moment it’s just for MGs, our gameplay tests showed to us that it’s a correct solution. In the future, if the gameplay of the community will prove that mounting is be needed for all the weapons, we will make it in a patch.
Q: Will Iron Front include 3D in-game VoIP as ArmA2 does?
A: Yes, of course. We think it’s a very good thing for the multiplayer gameplay.
Q: What are the chances of 3D tank interiors being added to the game via patch or DLC/Add-On?
A: The chances are quite low. We had a 3d tank interior for test, for one tank only, and it was more a pain in the ass rather then a good solution. I know some people cry a lot about interiors, but we prefer to have more tanks without interiors, than 2 tanks with interiors. About our half-tracks, cars, aircrafts – they all have a detailed and accurate interior.
Q: On what platforms (Steam, GetGames, …) will Iron Front be released and will the retail version require Steam?
A: As far as I know, Steam will be for sure, DVD of course too. Not sure about GetGames.
Q: ArmA3 is also supposed to be released in 2012. What are the chances for an Iron Front 2 based on the ArmA3 engine?
A: That’s business secret =)
Q: Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
A: I would like to notice, that if the community will try to create some really good modifactions, it’s possible that we will offer them a helping hand and include their work in the official patches, to make the game better for us all =)
Thank you for your time.
All pleasure was mine =)

Hi,
I just saw that... Iron Front is a strategic game and FPS strategic game who use the same engine than ARMA. The cities look epic and the planes too.

The ARMA2 engine is not known for it's realistic flight models.. As a mater of fact all aircraft in ARMA2 are pretty dumbed down versions.. But that is wrt modern 'systems'. So there is a chance they can simulated a WWII plane reasonable

Very excited about this game, I always had problems getting the invasion mod to work over arma2..it was just a bit clumsy to set up, no jgsme etc..but since this is stand alone..should be a snap..hoping someone will do some Fallschirmjager and SS camo smock skins for some of the Wehrmacht men.

You only need to use Six-Updater.
It's like jgsme, no, it's better since it downloads and keeps synchronized the mods.

Is it based on the Arma engine? I'm concerned about the 8 mission campaign. If it's linear or "on rails" it might be over very quick. I guess if it's based on the Arma engine there will be a mission editor?
von Brühl

Yes, it is based on the ArmAII engine, and I agree, I hope there's more to it for scenarios than the i44 mod had. Based off a glimpse of the menu in one of the gameplay videos online, it looks to have 15+ missions it ships with.
Not sure about the mission editor, but I believe I read somewhere it will.

If you don't buy it through steam, you download and manually install updates as in the patches, and Im sure they will be found on the official game site. Typicially I would rather buy the stand alone game...than through steam, but I'm having problems finding an hard copy at the moment. I'll probably get it through steam for now, then buy a hard copy when the price drops, just to make sure I have one.

I would even say that everything looks better than the I44 mod! That and I have been reading about some of the new stuff this adds to the base ARMAII engine.. Like taking into account the armor slop, thickness.. and what is behind it should you penetrate the armor. All in all this could be the WWII tank sim I have been waiting a very long time for!! ;)

I would have rather had it the other way around, preferred Steam, just for the ease of patching, or replacing upon computer change.
@ace: I wonder how much of a tank sim it will be, doubt there will be gears/transmissions, real engine management, but at least looks better than anything currently out there (WWII wise).

A saying in war "if u dont have air power ,u have tanks ,if u dont have tanks u have artillery"
if take any of these things out , you cant have real tactics in game play , so to tack out
german tank destroyers like jagdpanther and Panzerjaeger lV/70 that the germans used in defence and tanks for offence is taking out a whole part german tank tactics

The only problem with that theory is that neither type was produced in significant enough numbers to effect anything, and all things being equal I'd rather have a good game without a few pieces of armor today than with everything that the Germans built in three years.
I mean, to each his own, If people would rather complain about what they don't have that be happy with what they do, then have at it. I'll be busy causing mayhem on the eastern front!

Well gentlemen before bothering about lacking vehicles in the game, remind the historical background it is founded at. The Baranov bridgehead introduced the first Tiger II to the eastfront. This means all vehicle took apart at this location in july 44 are in. No Nebelwerfer battery took apart in the battles around Baranov in july 44, same belongs to any SS units or Panzerjäger, which were send to the invasion front and the battlegrounds in southern ukraine.
I am more concerned about the low res textures introduced agian, after these were alread yeliminted in ArmAOA 1.6. This is what really spoils fun for me.

not true badaim they were used at market garden effectively, however most of them were used on the eastern front but they were also massed for the ardennes offensive. although only 400+ were made they were able to destroy any allied vehicle.
what ever vehicles fought during the war in what ever amount would be nice for the mission makers to make as historically correct CO-OPs and campaigns as possible.

In the first scenario, check out one of the Soviet snipers, he is wearing pea pattern pants. Dont worry, others will fully reskin the uniforms in good time, I'm actually working on it right now. As for the Jagdpanzers and other tanks, its only a matter of time as well before those appear in the game.
All in all, its a very good game that runs well, and is quite enjoyable. It's almost what Clod BOM is trying to be with their ground units.

I'm still trying myself to figure out how to enable armory and boot camp, should be unlocked, might check the deepsilver forums. As to the games, its wonderful, and if you have a 3 gig gpu, you can set all the eye candy to ultra, and then the resolution and detail is amazing. I've a GT9800 1gb, a Q6600 and 4GB of RAM and the game runs much more smoothly than I dared to hope. I've not yet gotten into anything really hairy but so far, although there are some issues when the particles are flying, this game looks absolutely fantastic. On a high end system it must look astonishing. Perhaps the panners haven't figured out they need to increase 3d res as well as screen res?

Got this yesterday and it seems brilliant so far. I have to say, it's considerably better than I44, but there are still a few things missing. For example, the first time I died I got the usual 'Ah f... that hurts!' in the weird German accent that you get in OA, but other than that it seems great!
Has anyone tried the mission editor yet? Have all the scripting codes been carried over from Arma?

It seems pretty good, the only problem I've come accross is that in the cutscenes in the German campaign the German officer seems to like to run away whilst speaking to you, so you can't actually hear anything he says. The actual game AI seems very good though.

Hmmm it feels just like what it is, and that's a mod of Arma2 and nothing more. I don't feel the game brings anything new. Once the novelty of the voices and different weapons wears off, which is pretty quickly, you don't feel like it's a new game at all. Nothing seems to add to the immersion to make me feel that I'm on the Eastern front of 44.
The game continues to fuel my biggest gripe with Arma single player and that is that game play is not realistic due to the AI. This is pretty bad for a series that strives for realism. Will they ever work on the AI? It has the same problems since OFP from 11 years ago.
If you play realistically, that is avoiding getting killed at all costs, you'll find your AI buddies will get the enemy before you get a chance as they have super vision. Or the the enemy AI will kill all your buddies and then it's you against them solo or the mission is a failure.
The other option is to be more reckless and learn from your mistakes as you progressively die throughout the mission and reload the last auto-save to have another crack, until you know where all the enemies are and how to approach them. How's that immersive or realistic? :(
MP might be the place to be, but the usual case for me is if the server has a good ping, it's devoid of players. I'll continue for a bit, hopefully the campaign improves or I'll have luck with finding an MP server.

Ive been playing for a couple of days and it has its good points.
I think it has the same problems as Arma2 had though, and the graphics while good, are still no where near what can be done with a better more efficient graphics engine. Its a hardcore war sim with slightly better than average graphics with slightly clunky controls and control interface. Track-IR is the best thing going for it and i wish more FPS had it! Ultimately I get bored with it like i did with Arma2.
Red Orchestra 2 on the other-hand.... really nice graphics, good gameplay, great AI, good control set, great story telling, it really gets you in!

I wonder if the AI mod from ArmA II (Zeus AI, I think...) will work in this game?
That made a huge difference in our online gameplay when we dropped it in to the missions we ran in ArmA II. The AI would be far more aggressive, they would pull off some very good outflanking work and call your position to other enemy units in the area.

You have to be kidding, Red Orchestra 2 has by far the most stupid AI I have ever seen in a video game in the last years... moreover the graphics are also outdated and I've never really experiended good teamplay on public servers.
Furthermore you can't compare RO2 with Iron Front, all they have in common is the WWII setting.

Well..
Been playing IF44 this weekend.. And here is what I have found out
I forgot that ARMA does not model the interior (cockpit if you will) of the tanks.. Which kind of bummed me out. But still alot o fun playing on the tank servers.. Just hard to find one this weekend.. Hopfully that will change with time
As for the planes.. Yikes! I think I can count on one hand how many times I have flown a plane in ARMAI and ARMAII.. And it only took me a few seconds to remember why after flying a P39 and Fw190 in IF44.. Totaly Arcade as a flight sim!
The FPS aspects of IF44 (ARAMII) is the real redeaming quality of this game! Which will become more aparent as more stable servers start showing up over the next few weeks.

Are the maps any bigger than the ArmA II postage stamp sized ones?
Still debating getting this.
I do like tanks.

They are about the same size..
The big difference that I can see if the ARMAII maps mark the edge of the maps with water.. As in a island.. Where as it appears the IF44 extend the land out beyond the useable area kind of like IL2 did/does with that extention being this sort of blan uselss land with no real details to it

Cool..
I mean it is fun!
ARMA stuff has allways been a realistic first person shoot first and formost.. that 'allowed' you to drive dumbed down vehicals and dumbed down airplanes and hellos
So if your expecting a realistic WWII tank and flight sim.. Don't get this!!
But if you can accepted some dumb down aspects to 'GET IT ALL' in one package than I think you will like this game!
In that is all we got to choose from.. At least until CoD sequals include the same.. and hopfully at a little less dumbed down level

Played ArmA for years. I understand about the poor vehicle modeling.

Tanks seem much improved, the AI's still some what random. Like the mortar fire-control, some issues with black screens. For £15 though, it's a pearl.

Exactly, and if you like missions where you end up with only one kill after a 30 minutes this is also for you. And where you accept that the AI can be really stupid at times but they never act in the same way "on rails"... It feels almost as stupid and awesome in this game as it did years ago in Operation Flashpoint :) Trucks running into obstacles, but never the same obstacle which makes it different every time... I remember some co op mission in OPF that me and a friend played 20 times or so to beat. Every time the AI did some new thing so our plan had to change and that changed how the AI acted in response... Finally we sneaked around the whole map and tricked that darn AI BMP into a trap :) One of my best gaming memories!

That is one of their strong points.. The AI does not have that 'waiting for a trigger' feel to it.. That is to say they will not stand there for ever waiting for you to come around a corrner.. They will seak you out and come around that or another corner! ;)

Very slightly OT but I need technical advice. After playing for a day & a half ,Steam stopped letting me play saying my license was not verified(?) & now requires a code ( which I don't have) to start game.I've verified cache files & that doesn't help.I'm thinking of doing a whole new reinstall , but don't know how or where to start...Any ideas?

Sounds like you installed a beta patch (they should not be used with Steam version). If so remove the patch files manually and then check integrity again.

I went online for a short time last night.
Some "capture the flag" kind of thing. I played a Russian sniper.
Saw a German crawling in the tall grass on the other side of the road from me. (I was hiding behind some stacks of wheat in a field). I popped him, unfortunately for me, he was the host...
I was kicked in less than a minute...
He had an enourmous point total too...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can also try searching for ArmA2 tutorials on Youtube or forums. Probably they are written better.
To me most of menus are easy to use with mouse-wheel rotation (and some key-bindings) and the only inconvenience is soldiers selection with F1-F12 keys.
