I've been away from PC game simulators for a while now - became a father in 2006 and now - like his dad, my son is showing signs of interest in airplanes! :) Makes me so proud! Last Christmas we bought him a cheap Wii game that's pretty much centered around the Battle of Britain. We love playing it, but for me personally, it just doesn't quite cut the mustard, regarding graphics and sounds! He actually enjoys watching me play on my older simulators! So with a need to satisfy my hunger for a hi-end graphics simulator once again, I found IL-2 Cliffs of Dover. Needless to say this really caught my interest! So, at present I'm kind of on the fence as to whether I should purchase this game - or not. Allow me to explain.
I watched the trailer on the home page for IL-2 Cliffs of Dover and unfortunately, it looks considerably inferior to the same type of videos posted on YouTube?! I realize that in a few cases "original" video from the game has been "enhanced" with PoserPro, but what I'm seeing on the home page is really a bit disappointing!! My guess is, its probably the original trailer made using a "stand in" graphics engine, but STILL! I have the original IL-2 Sturmovik PC game and from what I can see, not all that much has changed - graphics wise. The MOST disappointing issue of all are the sounds!! Unless I'm very mistaken the EXACT SAME engine sounds are used in this new 2011 version of IL-2 Cliffs of Dover, as were used in the original version of IL 2 Sturmovik! And that's quite a big disappointment! :(
I apologize up front for being so blunt, but those sounds we're - to be quite honest - rather cheesy back then, when compared to Combat Flight Simulator (Pacific Theater), which came out a couple of years "before" the first IL-2 Sturmovik! I guess being a graphic designer by trade, I have a little more "discriminating tastes" than what some other gamers may have, and appreciate the efforts of software engineers when they go the extra mile to not only make the best possible realistic "look" to a game, but also do their best to use believable aircraft engine sounds!. Please don't get me wrong! IL-2 Cliffs of Dover seems to be a very impressive PC simulator, but still a bit off the mark - at least to me - at present.
After asking this same question in the forums of IL-2 Cliff of Dover, I was told that: "both sound and graphics have received updates since the release of Cliff of Dover and graphics is not far off another major upgrade (if it hasn't already been released)."
So... I'm hoping someone can offer me an answer as to whether these "updates" have occured and just how good (or beleiveable) they actually are. And if so, what should I look for when purchasing the game to ensure I get the latest upgrades. Or are the upgrades something that will end up having to be downloaded? I guess I kind of need a good reason to spend the money for this game, but right now I'm still kind of on the fence as I stated.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
