If the other trees are going to be as detailed as this one it should be good! I'm glad they're also including RAF on release, unlike World of Warplanes. This seems to be a much more rounded and realistic planeset compared to that as well.

Either way, I'm just looking forward to getting to fly in a Tempest or Typhoon. Even though it's only arcade(ish), it'll tide me over until CloD gets one, which is probably a long way off yet.

Quite some time ago the COD developers said they were keeping some information close to the chest because of the competition. At the time I didn't see any, but it appears they must have been talking about Gaijin. The original Gaijin release, Wings of Prey was no threat, but this one could be if they learned their lessons from their first attempt. I had high hopes when beta testing WOP, but they failed to address the issues in their patches. War Thunder could be different. It would be nice to see a realistic competitor to COD, that could help build the genre.

Quite some time ago the COD developers said they were keeping some information close to the chest because of the competition. At the time I didn't see any, but it appears they must have been talking about Gaijin. The original Gaijin release, Wings of Prey was no threat, but this one could be if they learned their lessons from their first attempt. I had high hopes when beta testing WOP, but they failed to address the issues in their patches. War Thunder could be different. It would be nice to see a realistic competitor to COD, that could help build the genre.

If this is the case then MG are in deep water, they won't stand a chance but yet again I'm saying they are not really competing for the same players. These new free-to-play online flight"sims" are built from the ground up for fast instant battle gratification which I for one can appreciate when I don't have a lot of time and want some quick fun. They have easy to understand and intuitive interfaces that anyone will get instantly. CloD is the total opposite, it's more slower paced "earn it by the swet of your brow" gratification which I also appreciate. Big maps but also smaller. The problem for CloD here if they want to be in competition with these free-to-play alternatives is first and foremost the lack of an easy to understand interface and all tinkering required. Also, luthier have already stated that they won't make any type of coop interface, it's up to the players to make that stuff by ourselves. With that kind of an attitude towards multiplayer MG wil attract very few people who play other online "sims".

Bottom line, some people will grow bored of War of Planes etc. and start to look for a longer lasting more challenging epxeriences and that's where CloD and it's sequels come in to play. Some people will play both (like myself probably) because they are different experiences and will probably compliment each other very well. I just don't see CloD and the others as direct competitors, it's more wargaming.net vs gaijin and MG standing outside watching them slugging it out whilst picking up the scraps.:-P

I don't know about COD just picking up the scraps of wargaming. net vs Gaijin, Wings of Prey didn't even make a dent in the IL-2 community and I'm not so sure WarThunder will either unless they make a workable Mission Builder, Larger maps with airfields for both sides, to make more realistic missions. I do agree Gaijin could corner a good share of the airquake crowd, but the rest remains to be seen.

I don't think they are after the IL-2 community directly which in size is like an ant compared to the elephant that is the World of Tanks community for example. The "instant battle button" crowd is faaar bigger than any sim community and that's the people they want. I think it's more like MG -or 1c rather- that wants the "instant button crowd". They (1C) have seen how successful World of Tanks is and they want in on the action. What I meant by picking up the scraps was that CloD will attract player from these other "sims" when they have grown fatigued of the shallowness and sameyness of said "sims".

CloD or the sequels will never have over 20.000 players playing online at the same time on a Friday night. If we start to see CloD servers packed with more than a thousand players at the same time then I'd say it's a success for MG and I will be really happy if that happens sooner rather than later.

There was never a doubt these arcade sims communities were huge in comparison to the IL-2 series. There is some doubt as to whether these arcade sims will provide enough realistic options to draw members of the IL-2 community. I thought Wings of Prey came very close but failed, hopefully WarThunder will be better. Like you say these sims are a gateway for some to the more realistic IL-2 series, but I'm hoping they become more of a competitor, realisticly speaking.
