1940 Downed RAF Aircraft Photos on German ebay.

Hi all,

German ebay (ebay.de) often has original photos for sale of captured/downed RAF aircraft for sale.

This selection appears to be from May 1940. It includes Hurricanes,Battles and a Lysander. The Spitfire probably relates to a later period.

These images will be useful to skinners, researchers and those with a general interest in the subject.

This makes you wonder how many private collectors potentially have very important pictures and they just don't share them. A true shame, don't you think?

Wonder what happened to the Hurri pilot, it looked like a very rough landing :(

"Block 3/G within an order batch of 40 aircraft (V6665 - V6704). Third production batch of 1,700 aircraft built by Gloster Aircraft Co, to contract 85730/40/23a. Powered by Rolls-Royce Merlin III or Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engines, driving Rotol or De-Havilland three blade variable pitch propellers. Aircraft delivered between July 1940 and August 1941, average rate of production 4-5 aircraft per day."

"P/O D.B.H.McHardy of No 229 Squadron became a P.O.W. on the 26th of October 1940 when his Hurricane I (V6704) was shot down off the French coast by a Bf 109 after attacking a He 59 at 11:30hrs."

"He had brought his favourite Hurricane V6704 to how-to-play-the-piano-books a forced landing in a field three miles north of Boulogne. In hospital with a broken jaw, McHardy was courteously visited by his assailant, Hauptman Phillippe, who went on to a distinguished flying career. Simpson was never found. Hardy McHardy like so many others in 1940 had not received much gunnery training."

Very true about them not being shared. And when the collector dies, all too often the family throw the photos away:!:

I've sometimes thought of buying some of these photos,but they tend to sell for crazy prices. Look at the Spitfire for example.

There are one or two consortiums who bid high figure on ebay and sell copies to authors etc.

There are no copyright issues on these photos and you can save them to your HD should you wish.

This Spitfire Mk.Ia marked '5+2', was used by 5./JG 2 at Bernay for comparison flying tests against Bf 109 and FW I90s in October 1942. Another Spitfire was here in April 1943, marked '3+9'.

Got Repaired, and to the German Testcentre at Rechlin (marked '5+2') from 12.41 to 9.42; Test flown 5.6.42 (PIt H.W. Lerche) and then to "Group Bernay"(5/JG.2) in France in 1942/43.

..or twisted.. I suppose only the pilot's family would have any interest on such picture? I quite don't get it. I mean, it's surely fascinating, rich with history and what not, but spending THAT much for a print (it's not like you get the negative or an exclusive thing with it..) it's madness..
