View Full Version : Please fix the AI

The one thing keeping me from loving this game is the absolutely atrocious, unrealistic absolute bullcrap AI.

They outspeed you
They outmaneuver you in blatantly unreal ways, rolling over multiple times in a row faster than the player can without losing air speed or anything
They act stupid as can be, running out of ammo they then fly in a straight line to their base and completely ignore you even after you start shooting at them

And they seem indestructible, I took up a hurricane, infinite ammo clicked on and tried to shoot a running BF109 down, after hundreds and hundreds of shots all over the fuselage and wings he continued on his path just fine, no problems. Maybe this is a problem with the damage model or the damage the bullets are capable of doing but fix this crap!

These issues are the only thing keeping me from loving Cliffs of dover.

i agree with the behaviour of the AI......but they are as vulnerable as human players online.
try to aim at relevant parts of the aircraft like engines, fuel tanks or cockpit to kill the pilot.try to use a different loadout could help you either bringing the enemy down faster.
i dont have any problem to destroy ai planes.

Yep, AI has always been pretty stupid in this series, the argument that AI is unrealistic, is totally correct, because AI don't actually exist...

Like he said, try aiming for vital aircraft components, radiators, engine, cockpit, control surfaces etc and fix your convergence and gunsight and try changing ammo types.

I guess maybe my gunnery is just crap but I swear I've sprayed all over vital parts with literally hundreds of rounds and the enemy goes unharmed.

What convergence would you recommend?

Our main priorities now are:

1. Physics and FM. This means plane behavior in the air, brand new landing gear model on the ground, collision modeling including tree collision (if performance allows), and improved vehicle physics.
2. AI. Currently working on everyone’s favorite controls flutter and AI wingman behavior. Also working on improving radio comms, getting your crew to be more verbose on the intercom, and lots of other changes. Coupled with #1, this should give us quite a dramatic change in how air combat looks and feels.
3. Performance. We are in final stages of testing a thorough overhaul of the game’s graphic engine. It won’t look any different but it will be much more streamlined. It’s too early to say what the FPS increase will be in the final version, but it shouldn’t be less than 50%.
4. Sound. The sound in the v15950 is considered a beta. We will continue to improve existing sound, and to add new ones to the aircraft and to the world around them.
5. SDK. As promised earlier, still planning to release a map-making SDK in the near future. More details will be released when we are ready for them.

They are working on it for the next patch, the AI behavior and roll rates are a bit off right now.

CloD's AI is not perfect, but at least it's much much better than IL-2's one.

AI isn't as fast as it used to be. At first AI outspaced me as well, but it was my fault (How the hell could a 109 barely reach 350 kph in level flight?). Believe me, once you get the idea of throttle-prop pitch combination, you will fly much faster and can catch AI in no time. Of course, chasing a 110 in Hurricane is pretty much hopeless.

AI is vulnerable. There is so many damage boxes that can be hit, so no way to foretell how many bullets are needed to down a bird. I once killed a Spitfire with just 10 hits from 109's 7,9mm machine guns. On the other hand, a Ju-88 once survived 250 hits from my Hurricane. Very often, it takes about 30 MG hits to down a fighter and double or three times that much to down a bomber.

AI can be surprised. Approaching from lower 6 is the best way IMO. AI only reacts once they see bullet flying by. Sometimes I feel AI is too much passive. They keep flying level and straight as if the encounter 5 seconds ago was just a bad dream. And AI tend to retreat when they lost contacts. I once lost sight of a 110 and gave up searching, expecting AI to sneak behind me. Guess what, I landed in England without a scratch.

AI does have unrealistic roll rate, which makes them like the annoying endless barrel-roll. AI rarely does boom-and-zoom and tends to go into a dogfight, or more than often, retreat.

Overall, AI is much better, though not as challenging as the old IL-2's one. Another drawback is: AI coordination with player and with each other is a big zero. It's pointless having a big dogfight where everyone is for himself. For this reason, I prefer lone-wolf missions.

There is real convergence settings in there for all aircraft and wingspans at distance etc, very good manual that is.

... working on it,...next patch,...?

Sorry but, they are working already 6 years on it, plus they recently said that most of the improvements are going to be implemented only in the next sequel of the sim (that you have to buy of course in order to enjoy the improvements for CloD) as far as I remember. Correct me if I´m wrong.

Besides that - no info so far on when the next patch is going to come nor any precise info on what will be fixed in it.

PS: dont take it personal von Pilsner, it`s not meant that way. I only mean the ones responsible for this mess.

Maybe the AI is better than IL2, but I have more fun fighting the AI in IL2 because I can actually hit enemies in IL2 because their only maneuver isn't to roll four times and then pull out slightly, then roll four more times and continue the process so long as you stay on their tail.

Really if they just got rid of the rolling crap I would be happy enough to enjoy this game.

Use flame projectiles against 109s. If you hit the right spot close to the motor, 3 seconds of fireing is enough.

-->big explosion and your problem is solved.

If I could change the default loadout...I would love to :(

I've tried to change the defaul loadouts for the guns on many many missions over and over, either I'm doing something wrong, or it does not work correctly. Any advice on how exactly to chagne the
loadout? I've tried dragging and dropping the various versions..Stahlkern, Hartkern, etc...but it chagnes nothing.

redpiano

I figured out how to change loadouts a while back, from the main menu go into options, play plane or something like that and then select the plane whose loadout you want to change and do it from there. I don't know why it's like that, maybe there's a way to do it before a mission but I haven't seen a way.

Currently I believe there is no way to change them right before mission and they must be done on the main menu in the "Plane" area, it's really quite stupid that way... :-x

Totally agree,

The game is great and loads of fun but constantly plagued not just by combat AI, but so far i hate the campaign, nothing but flaw after flaw! Seriously just on the second mission and half the aircraft sat waiting before taking off and basically didnt move when asked to by ground control. So i was on my own, then just say you put autopilot on, one minute ur in formation - next collision! On top of that i was flying the BF110 mission to take the capturned fighter back up north where it will be safer and im told that they way is clear and everyone knows im coming (not to shoot) Took off and got shot down by my own aircrew!! WTF??

So yeah the AI is a joke and makes this almost unplayable and takes away the enjoyment of the game:(
