Aircraft art appreciation time :-).

I posted lots of Roy cross Airfix box-art at the UBI forum.

Here's a link for those who like this sort of thing:

Ahh brilliant, some of those are actually really good works of art on their own, nostalgia aside. I think my personal favourite is the Tornado in the mountains.

Whilst we're on the topic anyway, me and my brother just recently got back in to modelling after doing it as kids (we're just in the process of finishing the 1:24th Mossie whilst I'm back in the old country over Christmas), though I tend to stick with Revell these as I really like 1:32nd and Revell do that extremely well, especially for the price, but the box art is certainly lacking compared to Airfix. Still, there's a number of kits I didn't even know Airfix did in there, like the Jaguar. Out of print now I suppose.

One question though, what is that early twin engined Lancaster-looking thing at the beginning of the second post (I think!)?

This is the one I mean:

I have another smaller version of that painting with the caption "Fairey Aviation Ltd. Hendon Night Bomber"

Yep, that's a Fairey Hendon.

I seem to remember a report saying that in a strong headwind, these A/C were known to fly backwards relative to the ground.

Thanks for posting the box art and the links Major, it reminds me of the days I used to spend poring over the Airfix catalogue, ticking which order I'd get the kits in over the next year.

The box art always had a huge impact on which ones it'd be.

There are lots of good aviation artists around, but I don't think anyone will ever replace Roy Cross.

Cheers!

Glad to see these are the originals and not the neutered ones.

Didn't they recently move back to the originals? I was under the impression that after a lot of people complained about the new 'sterile' ones, they brought the originals back. Might be wrong though, but it was a couple of years back anyway.

The originals would have included swastikas on all German A/C. In the UK they would anyway.

The only one I spotted here is on the Salamander.

Today's box lids seem to be a mixture of old and new, with the old ones having swastikas erased.

Airfix have recently commissioned a new artist who is much closer to Roy Cross' level than has been evident on some boxes.

Remember the 1/24th scale Stuka box from the 80's? Bloody awful!

Great stuff thanks! Although I do think nostalgia's a thing of the past. ;)

They were also altered to remove any depiction violence/death. James May brought it up when he met Roy Cross on the Toy Stories TV series.

Sorry for the bad quality.
