I pulled the mission briefings from Luftwaffe tournament for if there is interest in how these are. Just text. I will be flying RAF!

Here, there is a video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXbhHIW6mfU

Welcome to the Cliffs of Dover Luftwaffe mission set!

The challenge is three-fold:

- Fly each mission in the tournament at your usual realism settings
- Score as many victories as you can with your pilot
- Keep your wingman alive

The winner is the pilot who completes the eight missions with the greatest number of victories!

Some missions will include bonus challenges, such as protecting your bombers (scores as 2 victories) or bringing down specific enemy aircraft (such as enemy aces).

You will be flying the Luftwaffe’s finest fighter, a Bf109E4, as part of the famous JG26 Jagdgeschwader.

PSEUDO-DYNAMIC(TM) MISSION DIFFICULTY

Missions and enemies will increase in difficulty as you progress. You start against fewer, slower, weaker opponents. You finish in all out melees against the Luftwaffe's finest.

You are not flying alone - your wingman 'Fritz' is at your side. Try not to lose him. Not only is losing your wingman bad karma, but you will lose 1 victory point each time he is shot down. He is a tough nut, and if he is shot down he will walk, swim or limp back so that he is with you again for your next mission.

Your wingman's skill and aggression will increase as you progress. Fritz starts mission 1 as a timid undisciplined Rookie, and ends as an aggressive and disciplined Veteran.

RULES

You can fly each mission only twice: once for practice, and once for real. The best of your two missions can be submitted.

If you are shot down in the mission, no victories count. You must move on to the next mission.

You should fly with your normal realism settings but two settings are mandatory: you MUST fly with limited ammunition and with vulnerability ON.

You must submit a screenshot of your summary screen to qualify. Remember, sometimes just surviving is a good result, so submit your results as a screenshot and include a short combat report, even if you don't score a victory!

This is an HONOUR tournament. If you cheat, you merely dishonour yourself!

Mission 1 Briefing

You have taken your new wingman Fritz on a check flight over the Channel. A former kannonier who has only just graduated from flight school, he appears barely capable of taking off and landing again in his Emil, let alone dogfighting, so try to keep him out of trouble.

Enemy patrols have been sighted in the area, but the British pilots are cowardly, poorly trained and their machines are no match for the 109.

Scoring:

Enemy aircraft: +1 victory point
Fritz shot down: -1 victory point

LW Tournament mission 2

Fritz learned a little from that last mission, but not enough! You have decided he badly needs more combat experience and have taken him on a freie jagd over the Channel, hunting for trouble. You wouldn’t mind a little more action yourself…

Be careful what you wish for.

Scoring:

Enemy aircraft: +1 victory point
Fritz shot down: -1 victory point

Briefing

Fritz badly needs experience. The enemy is out there, you just have to find them. You have decided, against normal doctrine, to fly low over the Channel in the hope the enemy aircraft will be silhouetted in the sky above, making it easier even for a novice like Fritz to spot them. It will be difficult for them to spot you down among the waves and with the superior performance of your 109, climbing up to engage them will not be an issue. Happy hunting!

LW Tournament mission 3

It was interesting to see the new RAF Spitfire II in action at last. It is still an inferior machine to our 109s. It is slow in a dive, can barely stay with the Emil in a climb, and is poorly armed. If this is the best Britain can do, then the Battle is nearly won! But the day is young, and there is still time for another sortie…

Scoring:

Enemy aircraft: +1 victory point
Fritz shot down: -1 victory point

Briefing

You have been ordered up for the last patrol of the day. It should be a quiet mission, although a flight from JG51 reported being bounced by high flying RAF fighters earlier today, so perhaps they are trying new tactics. No matter, your skills, combined with Fritz who is improving every mission, will see you through. Keep your wits about you.

LW Tournament mission 4

Known as Fliegendes Stachelschwein – the Flying Porcupine - the Short Sunderland flying boat is the RAF Coastal Command’s principal anti-submarine and sea rescue machine. It earned its name on 3 April 1940, when a Sunderland operating off Norway was attacked by six of our Junkers Ju 88 heavy fighters. The Sunderland shot down one Ju88, damaged another enough to send it off to a forced landing and then managed to escape. With multiple .303s, four engines and a solid airframe, it is not an easy machine to bring down – but the Ju88s were not armed with the wonderful MGFF 20mm cannon!

Briefing

British flying boats have been stalking our U-boats as they make their way from Brest into the Channel. One hour ago one of our boats reporting being attacked mid Channel. They usually hunt in pairs, with a light fighter escort. Find them, deal with the escort, and eliminate this threat. But be careful out there, it is a long swim home.

Scoring:

Enemy fighter: +1 victory point
Destroy enemy anti submarine aircraft: +2 victory points per aircraft
Fritz shot down: -1 victory point

LW Tournament mission 5

Your katschmarek Fritz is now ready for major operations. His combat vision has improved, as has his gunnery. He is less timid now, and perhaps a little overconfident in his own flying abilities, but he is showing promise. You will accompany other fighters of JG26 escorting Stukas on a raid. The target is Dover port. The Stukas are vulnerable, and not showing themselves to be as useful in this conflict as they were in Poland or France. In reality, they should be withdrawn from combat but your job is to get them to the target and back…

Briefing

It is inevitable that as soon as we approach the British coast, fighters will suddenly appear at the right place, and the right time. The damned British must have spies at all our airfields, sending them intelligence about our targets. No matter, the more fighters they throw at us, the more they will lose! And the closer we bring the inevitable invasion. As to today’s mission – we’ll certainly get the Stukas to their target. Whether they make it home again? Well, we’ll do what we can…

Scoring:

Enemy fighter: +1 victory point
If more than 1 Stuka makes it back to France: +2 victory points
Fritz shot down: -1 victory point

LW Tournament mission 6

Now that victory is so close, who has decided to join the party? Yes, the Italians in their toy aeroplanes still painted in desert camouflage! What a circus. You and Fritz have been designated to accompany an Italian raid on Manston and provide advice to the Italian commander about the tactics used by his pilots. You are not expected to take an active part in the combat, but…

Briefing

By all accounts the Italian machines are not the only relics of the 1930s, so are their tactics … in a recent raid on Ramsgate you heard they made a parade over the target in airshow formation before turning slowly around and then dropping their bombs, 14 miles from the target. Today they are attacking Manston with their lumbering BR20s and little biplanes. Although your role on this mission is technically as an observer, you have a feeling they may need a little help. Fritz can write up the report (if he once again manages to make it back to France)…you have other plans!

Scoring:

Enemy fighter: +1 victory point
Ground target destroyed (vehicle or aircraft): +0.5 victory points each
Fritz shot down: -1 victory point

LW Tournament mission 7

JG26 has been temporarily repositioned to St Inglevert airfield to ready for a major hit and run raid on Bournemouth tomorrow together with JG51. And today you met the legendary cigar chomping JG26 Geschwader commander ‘Dolf Galland for the first time. He actually stopped by to congratulate Fritz for his report on Italian fighter tactics!! Fritz, who just six missions ago was a raw recruit!

Bah. There is no time to be upset about it, you are practicing radio coordination with JG51 today in preparation for the joint mission tomorrow and the JG51 pilots are already airborne.

Briefing

Alarm! Enemy bombers are inbound! Get into the air and assist JG51 in driving them off!

Scoring

Enemy fighter: +1 victory point
Enemy bomber: +2 victory points
Fritz shot down: No penalty. If he is such a hero now, he can look after himself. At least this time he won’t have to swim home.

LW tournament mission 8. Final mission.

Adolf Galland has selected you for a special mission. (Actually, he selected Fritz, but Fritz persuaded him to include you as well…) Through a captured RAF pilot, Galland has learned that the leading RAF ace at the moment is actually a Czech known as Josef Frantisek, flying Hurricanes for their 303 squadron – a motley collection of British, Polish and Czech nationals. The man is apparently fearless, and a lethal shot. Galland cannot stand the idea there may be a pilot on the other side of the Channel better than him. Last night he flew over Northolt airfield in a Feisler Storch, and dropped a package on the apron outside the main hangar. Inside was a glove, and a note, challenging Frantisek and anyone from 303 Sq who wanted to join him, to a dogfight over the Channel at noon. Galland intends to show just who is the real Ace.

Briefing

Galland’s arrogance may have no bounds, but Germany cannot afford to lose its propaganda darling. The CO of 1/JG26 has told you and Fritz it will be your duty to keep the enemy off his tail while he and his hand-picked pilots go about their business. Once you are certain he is safely on his way back to France, you are free to pursue the RAF for your own entertainment, but not before. Under no circumstances must he be lost in this foolhardy duel! Of course, if HE cannot bring down Frantisek, but YOU do, he will not fail to be impressed. Promotion would be certain.

Scoring

Enemy fighter: +1 victory point
Lose Galland: -5 victory points
(Galland’s machine is leading the staffel; it has a distinctive mottled camouflage, and kill markings on the tail plane.)
Bring down Frantisek: +2 victory points
(Frantisek’s Hurricane is probably leading the British squadron. It has serial number RF-A)

Yes, it good fun. So far I am into mission 6 in the RAF tournament and my score is not so good...4 destroyed, 1 probable, 3 damaged. Maybe I will make ace...but at least have not lost my wingman but he has 2 kills! I think I will be better in the LW tournament in an Emil! S!
