The Australian Minister for Defence was just on the radio announcing that the RAAF is looking for places to preserve seven of our F-111's. We retired them last year after operating the type for over 40 years.
We've 'replaced' them with Super Hornets (can anything really replace a Hog!!!)
Basically the conditions are that you need an enclosed facility to display them to the public and need to remove any asbestos
Unfortunately they are going to demilitarise them before handover but they will pay for reasonable transport costs.
I assume this offer is only for Australians!
Now how big is that garage of mine?????

it'd be cool if you could still do a dump&burn every now and then ;-)

Ah Gold Coast Indy ... not to be outdone the Army Helicopter crews used to fly in amongst the buildings displaying the following:

They generally got a great response and were "rewarded" for their efforts ...... until someone complained :(

Apparently Clarkson's wife wasn't impressed at all with her husband's new paperweight, so he had to give it away eventually.

He never owned it, the whole thing was staged for the show.

GRRRR... Give me a TSR2 any day....
Saddest day in British aviation history :(

As good as the F-111 turned out to be I can't help but see it as the aircraft that doomed what was going to be a fantastic aircraft... no patriotism here BTW just sad to see politics destroy a great aircraft.

TSR2?!!... Defiitively I can understand now that you are (so) British

yup, I have to say that I never understood the nostalgia for the plane that never was

Yeah I can't either...
The TSR2 "was" you utter fool, it flew it was on the verge of full scale manufacturing, if it was an aircraft that never made it off the drawing board then yes I could understand that but it was almost complete and a better aircraft.

I meant nobody really knows how the TSR2 would have operated, since it never made it to production, what I meant is that I don't understand what all this "aaah I wish we had the RSR2!" is based on, if it's because it's a cool all British plane or because it actually served a purpose.
From what I could see and read on the plane anyway, maybe it's a good thing it never made it: it would have cost you a lot of money and would have soon become obsolete.
Cool plane nonetheless, the one in Cosford is fantastic.

Let's not get started on 'Aircraft that might have been'.
As a Canadian, the Avro Arrow story makes me rage.

Coincidentally, the day the Arrow and Orenda Iroquis engine projects were cancelled came to be known as Black Friday in Canada's aviation circles...and it is currently Black Friday in the US today (shopping sales extravaganza day).
