I watched it a while ago and wouldn't have known about the movie wasn't it been commented here in the forum. Got some nice scenes indeed. I think it would be good to have a sticky thread with aviation movies suggestions.

It's my favorite aviation movie, I bought the DVD some years ago after learning about it on the Ubi forum. It always reminds me of the honor of being a descendant of the Czech people.

Probably did'nt have any American actors! The Australian film industry used to cast an American in order to sell in the USA. Things have changed a bit.

It was never released full scale in the US. Just at a few film festivals. HBO ran it for a few months a couple of years back. I ordered the movie after I heard about it on the Il2 forum. Great movie, wish I had a chance to see it in a theatre. They used a bunch of left over material from the Battle of Brittain.

One of my favorite WW2 movies. Some great action shots. It still has the love triangle thing most "pop" movies seem to have to have. Also it has none of the tyre some "based on a true story" where there has to be a American winning the battle mostly by himself. I'd like to add it to my collection but you can't buy the DVD in Australia any more. :(

Perfectly done, historically accurate to the last detail, beautiful pictures, and no love story at all - the only female actor in the whole film had a silent 20 second appearance (effecting a really nice whistful look of Russel Crowe)...

And what happend? It flopped at the box office, that's what. A pity, but it is the answer to your question.

It seems that war movies without love in them only attract males or overwhelmingly male whereas a guy can at least lure his date to see it with him if it has a love story.

However there is hope. Seems there is a group of people alive and well on Youtube that dedicate themselves to taking these movies and painstakingly go through them and cut out all the mush and they've created a whole genre called all war no love.

They have these up there and some hour and a half flix are pared down to half hour or less. All action no love.

I think 12 o'clock high is up there and I think it's only 18 minutes long.

Probably you're right. I remember lively discussions on the exact sequence of firing a 12 pounder, none of the girlfriends was really interested in...

... but to take an existing film, which - wether I personally like it or not - is a piece of art created by its director, and to eliminate all these scenes sounds rather cruel to me. I seem to remember having heard something similiar on removing scenes with somebody smoking from films (youth protection or so). Imagine what would be left of Casablanca...

What a completely fabricated statement!!! You couldn't have possibly been more wrong in your claim, and you certainly can not claim to have ever seen the movie yourself. The movie is about leadership and the demands of Command Responsibility on senior Military Commanders.

Most importantly, as evidence of that, the movie is used in the USAF officer training programs as a means of discussing and developing military leadership and management skills.

Great movie with some great scenes. Also with 2 beautiful women. The only scene that is awful is the Spits MkI or II escorting B-17G´s! I like some love and sex in war aviation movies, after all it´s nice to have women playing with my stick, we both have joy! :-P

That might be the best argument I've ever read for what makes a great movie. Especially aviation movies. Any movie needs strong story development to be good. Even if it is a love interest. It needs character development so the viewer feels some involvement with the people on the screen. Just having booming and zooming airplanes doesn't make a movie. It might make a good documentary, but it doesn't make good entertainment.

Most of the aerial shots in "dark blue world" where "stolen" from unused material from the epic "battle of britain" movie from 1969.
There's a scene with a polished B-25, that plane was the most important camera platform in the original movie.
However, it's a nice movie. I love the scene with the train attack...
