Tonight's feature is "First of the Few". Made in 1942 it is a story about Supermarine and has some great footage from the time. It's not all fly around-n-shoot'em up...but gives a history of how things supposedly transpired. Of course this is the Hollywood...or the UK Hollywood take so you know they have to throw a chick in there for love interest. It's 1 hour and 54 minutes longand is best viewed in full screen. So with no further babble..on with the show...

OK its not a "movie" per say.... but home movies . Stuart Sumner..son of Cahrles Sumner...C5-Z "Bat Cave" came up with this today. seems a couple of the guys from the 357th had 8mm cameras and filmed life in Leiston, Suffolk as they saw it back in 44/45....added to it is some gun camera footage. Look, these are home movies....boys being boys ( unless you are looking for certain things or people...sigh/yawn haha)...and some of film was transferred to the high tech media of VHS first ( probably on a blinding fast pentium 133)...then to DVD, so parts are sketchy (esp part 2). but you will see some interesting things if you hang through it. a 51 belly lands @ Leiston...a burning 17 makes an emergency landing there...a RAF spit visits...a 51 catches a Do335...some decent gun camera footage. there is some actual footage of the planes you may have only seen in the books and pics...and some of the men who flew them and crews who kept them in the air. at the 2.37 minute and 2.58 minute mark of the second part you will see a skinny ass boy, first wearing a hat with the brim flipped up and then in full flight gear and a crusher hat walk past with a $#!t eating grin....boys, meet my dad. if you can sit through it...its kinda worth it. if you get too bored...like i said they are home movies...next weeks episode is all about Blenheims. (edit...dont know why this didnt fix the images...???)

this week we celebrate and give honor to the veterans who served, suffered, and sacrificed that we may enjoy our freedoms. this weeks movie reflects that. though its not an airwar flick it portrays the battle in the pacific that has images etched in our memories. And who better to exemplify this than John Wayne. so for Veteran's day i present to you....

welcome to this weeks episode of BoP TV1. when i was a kid movies often started with a cartoon or a short feature. i have yet to find a suitable cartoon ( tho i will ) but i did find a very nice short new reel to kick off this weeks show....a clip of the RAAF in P40s

http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=BNYuq67uf4E

and now for the main event...and to keep you thirsty for Birds of Steel... a movie VERY, VERY loosely based on Pappy Boyington and the squad he flew with. Facts go down in flames faster than Jap Zeros....BUT it is entertaining. So i give you...

This week’s episode has numerous interruptions but is worthwhile watching. The B 25 is one of the bombers i would love to see in BoS...just so we could recreate the Doolittle Raid scenario.... when I was in Ida, Louisiana at the 357th Museum over Veteran's day they had a celebration which included a catfish diner. There were 3 pilots from the 357th there and among the other veterans was a gentleman who flew with Doolittle on this famous raid. It was an honor to see him in person.

Once again you hit the nails head Dale. Never saw this version but it bring back memories as Spencer Tracy was my first hero of american actors from "Captains Courageous" - together with Mickey Rooney. Think I was about 8 when I saw it... Can still feel the lump in my throat. No happy ending. Still don't need them ;-)

something vintage for this week...also some sappy moments....but has Steve McQueen....McQs older brother i assume  . its a story that shows a different kind of flyer ( ugly american stereotype somewhat psychotic ) and his adventures in england during the war. has some decent "12 o'clock high" footage....black and white makes it all the better. enjoy.

trivia... a little about Cliff Robertson.

As a boy, Cliff Robertson was fascinated with airplanes, and would often hang around the hangers at a small airport nearby, where he traded odd jobs for an occasional quick flight. As a young man, he tried to enlist as a Navy flyer but with less than perfect vision he joined the Merchant Marine instead, serving during World War II. He saw action in the South Pacific, Mediterranean, North Atlantic and France. After the war Robertson became a reporter. He wrote for the Springfield Daily News in Ohio...

Robertson was a collector of airplanes, and an avid pilot, who held single-engine land and sea, multi-engine, commercial, instrument, balloon and glider ratings. Aviation was, he said, more of a passion to him than acting. He was a close friend of Burt Rutan, designer of the Voyager airplane and SpaceShipOne. In 1969, as Nigeria was ravaged by civil war, Robertson helped organize flights bringing food and medicine into the area. And in 1978, when Ethiopia was hit by famine, Robertson again organized incoming supply flights for charity.

The aircraft Robertson once owned but has since sold include:

Supermarine Spitfire Mark IX - The most famous military aircraft of all time and one of the most beautiful ever built. It went up against the vaunted Messerschmitt during World War II and beat back the German threat in the Battle of Britain. By the time production ceased in 1949, over 22,000 Spitfires (and Seafires) had been made. Robertson sold his after getting "an offer I couldn't refuse."
