It's here! Here's the readme:

BETA NOTE
* RUSSIAN README: Извините, не успеваем перевести!
* ENGLISH README: This readme is only partial;
* SOUND: Still working on the content for the new engine, but many of the features are already present in this build;
* MAPS: No new missions are provided for these in the beta version of the patch.

MAIN
* Drastically reworked graphic algorithms dealing with in-game color;
* Rewrote the sound engine from scratch;
* Added three new multiplayer maps: Steppe (medium), Fields (small), and Scimitar (small);
* Updated multiplayer GUI to allow users to easily select a position in an existing plane.
* Added two new aircraft - Bf. 109 E-4 and Bf. 109 E-4/B. These two are equipped with MG/FF-M cannons and so make use of the famous Minegeschoss.

AIRCRAFT - MAIN
* Reworked routines for gyro bombsights;
* Removed allusion to Engine 4 from He 111 model;
* Improved memory consumption for multi-crew aircraft;
* Airborne status is now checked correctly even if the aircraft in question departed prematurely;
* Landing status should be applied correctly when ditching in water;

VISUALS
* Reworked bombardier cockpits in aircraft so affected (He. 111 and Ju. 88) to accomodate new Lotfe gyro routines;
* Small caliber bullet hits on the ground now show difference in material being hit;
* Modifications in Blenheim's damage visuals;
* Added a range of visual SFX for higher-caliber guns;
* New bombsight visuals in Blenheim bombardier's cabin;
* Returned the famous Il-2 stall sound effect;
* Doubled the distance at which the tracers can be seen.

PHYSICS & A.I.
* Increased Lotfe bombsight gyro operational limit to 15 degrees of aircraft roll / pitch;
* Lotfe type bomb sight now stabilizes aiming platform to horizontal plane;
* Removed sudden jump in view angle when viewing through Lotfe ocular and moving bomb sight elevation for the first time in the flight;
* Increased side slip input limit to +/* 30 degrees for the Lotfe bomb sight;
* Made Kurssteuerung mode 2 for level bombers. This mode will also stabilize the aircraft in level flight;
* Reworked motor startup routines to accomodate new options available in the new sound engine;
* Adjusted ricochet angles on firm surfaces;
* Redesigned bomb sight in Blenheim and made it easier and more realistic to use;
* Blenheim bomb sight plane is now adjustable to reflect changes in plane AoA in level flight. Correction is applied automatically over a period of sustained flight and can compensate up to 3 degree changes in plane attitude;
* Fixed issue where overstress would inflict damage to airframe regardless of the Vulnerability difficulty setting.

NETWORK
* Changes to bombs' detonators setup will now be carried over once applied without the need to rejoin the server;
* Increased Lotfe bombsight gyro operational limit to 15 degrees of roll / pitch. This will give more tolerance to aircraft maneuvers as strict limits put too much obstacle to communication between bombardier and pilot while playing on-line;
* When flying as a bombardier, you should now use "Aircraft - Drop Ordnance (Bombs)" key (instead of "General - Fire Current Weapon" key) to drop bombs. This will remove confusion of on-line bombardier players who could not drop bombs using the key we're accustomed to.

AIRCRAFT - MISC.
* Decreased bombsight altitude indents by ten times. This will give you more control of the altitude input and make bomb sight aiming more precise;
* You can now switch off the boost cut-out control in Spitfires.

Very welcome list of changes and fixes. I hope the gyrocompass in the 88 is also included, seeing how most of the bombers got some love. Also, the Blenheim will now be useful as a level bomber too.

I'm off to download and test it, thanks for the continued support and keep up the good work.

Also, thread is now sticky.

Call me silly but will this work if im using steam? What do I do?

You manually download the file to your hard disk, then manually extract it (it's usually a compressed .rar file) to

(your steam parent folder)\steam\steamapps\common\il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover

It will ask you if you want to overwrite some existing files, click "yes".

If you want to roll back to the previous version, run a file integrity check through Steam and it will revert back to the latest non-beta version.

Do not forget to defrag Steam\CloD directory after installation or performance can degrade. The patch is big and creates many fragmented files while installing that can result in stutters.

Ok first patch thoughts.

1) Terrain colour is a lot better.
2) Shore line looks much much better
3) Sounds are are massive improvement, though not tested everything yet.
4) FPS took at hit, pre patch on Blackdeath trk, with everything maxed out at 1920X1200 I would average 57FPS, now Im at 47FPS so quite a drop.
5) Tree shadows still flickering but dont seem as bad
6) Still no FSAA???

Wait, wait!!!! what's with the Steam, when it will download from Steam?????? :confused:

This is a beta patch. The steam version will come out after this has been tested in the community and will automatically download and install.

If you want to try the patch out now, head to the sticky topic at the top of the forum and download it (500mb). Then you will need to extract it over your game files.

I thought it was stated somewhere that using old tracks after a patch didnt always translate well, how are FPS during actual play, the same drop?

S!

Sounds are better, especially for Bf109E :) Bf109E-4 is SWEET! Land colors and overall feel mucho better as the shore lines. Shadows flicker still and the AMD users will notice the "3 lines" in horizon, but VERY faintly.

Most performance hit for me are the shadows and trees. Especially trees cause stuttering at low altitude flying. Up high no problemo. The beta is a leap towards CoD being what it should have been so remaining hopeful for the future patches :)

In short, an improvement in a positive way while some issues remain.

I only had some few quick missions with the E-4 against some bombers, therefore cannot say very much about the changes.

What I can say is that it is great sounds with the 109 and the atmosphere in general!

And I have the impression that the AI gunners have become much more accurate - they shot my beautiful E-4 every time in pieces. :-o

Took the E4 out for a little spin, and....Whoa, man. Just...Whoa.

I actually got my better half breathing fire down my neck because of the sounds. They are simply AWESOME! FINALLY the 109 sounds like a 109. Actually got shot down twice and crashed once because I couldn't stop doing flybys :P

I also found that I definately liked the new colors etc. Also got a nice boost in performance, even with everything maxed out. Had some stuttering when I was down low in the trees, maneuvering heavily and panning around a lot, but nothing major.

The only issue I found was that for some reason, I've got "rainbows" (tearing etc) between some panel-lines and certain places in the E4's cockpit. Nothing too major.

Only somewhat annoyance was the static reflection in the instruments, and that only somewhat. Would love for them to be dynamic, or have the option to remove them. Probably something I'll get used to.

All in all: Applauds all around! Another good step towards becoming THE WWII-sim for years and years to come.

Welshman

My first thoughts:
1 Sounds are wonderful in comparison to original ones

2 Lighting looks more natural, plus noticed more sun glare at dawn

3 More white wave crests

4 Old tracks appear to have complete sounds now (not just sound of your own aircraft)

5 No additional crew animations yet (we'll have to wait for the 'gazillion' animations gathering dust!)

6 Maybe slight fps hit but early days not sure on that.

Looking forward to more improvements in this vein, big thumbs up. I'm watching England match but I want to get back to COD!!!

I was playing 'Dogfight - Even' mission last night and played it today (post-patch) and I'm getting a performance hit... 8-10 fps less and more micro stutters when flying low.

EDIT: cleared cache and defragged game directory and fps drop/stutter remains.

I'm still getting blocky water :D (nVidia 430 GPU) other than that it all looks great, I assume performance will probably increase over time as code is optimized.

Not as bad a hit as you but yes I got quite a hit as well.

Amazing sounds and graphics though.

Very impressed with the patch so far good job Luthier and CO.

Fuel load out in single player is still broken.
Flickering shadows is actually a little worse, when I flew an SP mission.

Stuttering is still there but only when flying low.
Channel colour is a lot better.

....and did I say that the sound is good.... its a lot better.:grin:

AI.... is still poor.

E4 turns like a spit!! But being a blue pilot im not complaing!! :grin:

oh Fraps works again!!

im not too keen on the way its switches from idle to revving on the spit , the guns seem a little weak sounding now too or maybe thats just me ..

noticed we've lost the clicks we used to get when using switches and toggles in the cockpit , i liked thoughs as it let you know you've done it .

i too noticed a performance hit , time for an upgrade on the gfx front i think , my 4890s are pushing there luck now , specially as xfire isnt working right yet .

110 Canopy won't close bug - FIXED!

New tracers - AWESOME

New colours, smoke and fire effects - WICKED!

new blood effects
the E4 is awesome
the planes fly better more responsive

the game looks beatifull and awesome
when you look the sun the whole screen changes with the new effect---wow
some fps hits but very playable [didn't change my settings]
also the stutters exists only in low flying and not that much as before
when you bail out you still hear the sound of the cockpit sometimes
the settings and loads in singlplayer still the same
you cannot load them or change them or save them
antiallising the same
the new sounds is very realistic
excellent job
the AI still the same maybe a little of change
comms works--[more added]

First impression:

New colour is better, especially land, sea, and shore line. Looks more like Europe now.

Great engine sounds, absolutely great. Better visible tracers, bullet impact, smoke and fire.

Better AI no more crashes during landing. AI now fly to their home base and land!

Firstly, thanks for keep working in the sim, I'm sure it will get better and better.
About the beta patch:
- new engine sounds are great, so are the guns;
- in the cockpit, we now have sounds for the magnetos, but lost sounds for fuel cock and lights, haven't tested more in this matter;
- when starting engine, I'm getting the dust from the ground coming through the plane structure to inside the cockpit, in my rudder pedals (I've seen this only in the hurricane);
- the colors need more adjustmens, the other tread about this topic has some nice critics. http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?p=330087#post330087
- when looking at the sun, it doesn't seem to shine, but puts a white fade all over the screen, this looks terrible;
- the new shorelines are a great improvement!
I'm new to the sim comunity and just grateful to have this game, any more work the dev team is doing is much welcome. Thanks guys, keep it up.

Shorelines, allied canopy tint and Sea - significant improvements.

The ground colouring/lighting is just fantastic and I had to make several emergency climbs this evening as I found I was not concentrating on flying but just staring at the ground!

Sea and shoreline textures and colours are now perfect too,this is such a big step forward.

Your team has certainly done us proud Luthier,the sounds now are absolutley beautiful.The only change I would make,would be to turn up the internal and external Browning machine guns sounds,I find them a little too quiet,but I guess that's a personal preference,overall I'm really impressed and I'm now sure we will see a few more guys online this week.;-)

I believe that's realistic. Engine sound kills the MG sounds drastically in real life.

Agreed. Many People ignore how incredible "loud" those engines back then were. Lots of the gun sounds is eaten by that. And I consider the new sounds very very fitting to that, as only the higher frequencies manage to penetrate that massive bass box in front of the pilot.

Extrmely cool patch, the whole game looks much more solid, much more "integrated". I got those FPS hits, too, but maaaan, I can live with that for now given the other improvements.

Thanks!

The cannon shell tracers really lag me out now man

Kurfürst
09-06-2011, 11:13 PM
Got mixed feelings. Patch and sounds definietely have potential. Got lag issues back with patch, probable result of memory handling.. over London seem to look for cache or something a lot, I get good FPS for a second, then it stops, good fps, stops again etc.

So GPU power is there to run it, it just can't seem to load it nicely.

E-4 cocpit is very buggy. Left side window slides forward (!!) instead of backward, and you can't click on the little plastic handle to open it (probably kept placing of "mouse active zone" from E-3).

Right hand side window does not open at all, neither does top window, even if they should.

I believe that top window also misses graphics for small plastic handle grip (like side windows), though I could not find accurate picture of it for comparison, I am pretty sure there was something the pilot could grab to open it..

You still cannot actuate flaps and elevator trim wheels at the same time, even if it was designed to be operated at same time, so pilot can compensate for trim change when using flaps.

Gunsight dimmer does not work on E-4 (its simple transparent glass)

BTW - I don't think Wehrmacht was enviroment conscious, so can we please get the Revi circle at full strenght lightining by default please? Its borin

FM (performance) problem is still there, E-4 cannot hit official specs at low altitude at full power.
http://www.kurfurst.org/Performance_tests/109E_Baubeschreibung/109E3_Baubeschreibung.html

Did not have time for further tests on any plane. Overall promosing, but please fix above problems.

Just tried and must say GREAT effort.

Here's my one (for now) gripe. MGs in the Brit planes need to be better. Don't care if this is realistic (whatever that means flying a computer), it needs to make you feel like your spitting lead, not spitballs. My ideal would be Jafa but with the volume turned down 25%. I'm done...let the hating begin;)

- Sounds much better
- landscape WAY better!

Now we need these things fixed:

- FFB constantly cutting out while flying then suddenly coming back on. Seems to happen when a minimum value is hit the FFB just turns off or times out, leaving the 'wet noodle' until some quick control input reminds it to turn on again. IL2 didn't have this problem.

- Flickering shadows. Please, this immersion killer has got to go - I'm sure it's not an easy fix but at least give us some more video options to choose which shadows we would like to keep, and be able to turn off others that we can live without for framerate sake.

-There was something satisfying about being able to hear the "thunk" of bullets off other planes. Yes, I know the engine is in front of you but there is always a balance between fun and realism even in a sim. Pre-patch it was probably too loud but now I'm just saying maybe it's too soft so let's be able to enjoy some of these small but satisfying things within reason. I can live with the softer gun sounds but again I'd bet you can feel them through the seat of your pants enough to make them seem 'louder'. Perhaps more bass in the gun sounds because of the occlusion through the plane.

-Smoke effects (including clouds) need tuning. They are hogging FPS unnecessarily, at least up close. Maybe it's the downside of being volumetric but perhaps there's room for performance tweaking there.

Just a few quick things in my opinion that could use work. Thanks for your efforts, things seem to really be shaping up.

Tested some of the stuff mentioned in the changelog and they work.

Ground handling physics: The Blenheim can now take off without swinging so violently to the right. Advance throttles to +1.5 boost and as soon as you got some speed to have some airflow over the rudder you can advance them the rest of the way, keeping it lined up with with rudder.

It still needs a bit of differential braking at the start of the run but nothing like it used to be when we had to constantly tap the brakes, kill our airspeed prolonging the roll and blowing the engines.

Bombsights: I only tested the Blenheim since i had already started with that one. It works fine now. I was at 8000ft and went for one of the airfields near Calais.

Setting boost at +1 to +1.5 psi gave me about 180mph indicated. Manual says that 200mph IAS at 8000ft is 225mph TAS, i was doing 20mph less IAS so i just set reduced TAS by a similar amount and set it to 200mph in the bombsight. I think there is some wind in the stock quick mission because my bombs drifted somewhat to the left, but other than that i hit the target just fine. If i had some wingmen with me we would have properly carpet bombed the place.

In terms of performance, i got a couple of artifacts in the cockpit during red out and the elongated "needles" of land protruding into the sea are still there some times, but i'm running older drives so that might be it (forgot to update them and when i remembered it today i was in too much of a hurry to fly the new patch :-P).

I don't measure my FPS but i didn't feel any noticeable hit. It might be a bit lower overall but it certainly feels much smoother and more consistent now, which is something i prefer anyway: i'd rather have a constant 40FPS with less stutters than 45 FPS with stutters.

In any case, it feels much smoother to me and i also raised the trees amount a notch without any noticeable effect on performance, not to mention it sounds and looks very good too.

Suggestions: If possible, a separate selection field in the graphics options for the player's aircraft textures in the future.

I'm running texture size at medium and that works well for the landscape and other units, but tends to blur a lot some parts of the cockpit in some aircraft or other parts of the model when viewing them from within the cockpit (external views still look fine, it's some of the cockpit views that get blurry and not all of them either).

Examples are the wing markings on the 109s that denote the step/no step zones for the ground crews and the cockpits in bombers, especially gunsights and bombsights.

Definitely a big step in the right direction. What i really would like to see for the next patch is focusing on the more gameplay-oriented features, like streamlining the control logic for all aircraft, correcting some non-working instruments and finalizing the radio commands.

By the way, the placeholder list of commands is impressive. I had a bit of fumbling around and if you make them work for the next patch it will be awesome. Among others, there are commands to have your crewmen:

report altitude (useful during landing)

report airspeed (useful during takeoff)

handle flaps/landing gear

tell the gunners to hold fire (if you want to sneak in without giving your position away due to tracers)

etc.

I'm much more excited about these features and now that it seems the graphics and sounds are up to a standard considered acceptable by most (baring the final AA and SLI/Xfire optimisations), i hope that you will have some time to address the actual gameplay side of things: the aircraft look and sound terrific now, let's start flying them and having them do what they were supposed to do :-P

Thanks for your continued efforts, i'm definitely looking forward to what you have in store next ;-)

Frankly my patience with this POS has now been exhausted. Why praise is being heaped upon developers for releasing a patch that still fails to bring the product up to the standard it should have been on release, and drops the already appalling frame rate still further, mystifies me.

I will check back in 12 months or so to see if anything has really improved. But I'm only doing that in the vain attempt to not totally lose the £50 I was conned out of to begin with. That's the only thing saving it from being binned.

Fifty quid! I must have been nuts!!

Before installing the zip file. Right click and select properties, Click on Unblock so that all the files are downloaded. This should install all the files required. Windows 7 and Vista seem to have a problem with zips. Or you can wait for the beta to finish and Steam gets the new patch download from the devs, usually by the end of the week.

I am still getting unplayable frame rates which I put down to my GPU. So while it looks great the FPS are all over the place even with reduced settings. Here's hoping for a Crossfire fix next.

Crossfire seems to work fine here, both GPUs and memory reported as getting equal use, temps seem to confirm this.

When I first booted up it took much longer to load to the point where I thought there was an error. Load times have reduced though longer than before - if you deleted the cache folder it may be worth trying again and give it a few minutes.

It's no problem to download the patch via the direct link rather than torrent. Just extract to CoD folder, works fine with Steam here, just don't validate files in Steam as this puts it back to last version :)

Awesome work guys, really, really nice.

I do have one question though, sorry if it has been asked before.
What is the proper procedure once the patch goes live?
Just let steam update or "uninstall" the beta by validating via steam before the patch goes live?
Also right now I have steam cloud disabled, but automatic updates enabled, is this good or not?
Thanks for any answers in advance.

If u click on the "Verify integrity of game cache" menu (under steam-game-properties-local files), it will restore the last official patch version. No need any other uninstall.

The auto update is good. If the beta become official, it will update the game (the beta patch version number is lower, than official patch).

Seeing some subtle improvements, for the better, in this beta patch. Kristorf will be glad to learn the Spitfire visuals that was changed in the previous official patch has been changed again and the custom skins no longer look as though they've been worked over with a belt sander. FPS is very good, flew low at 300 mph over Dover and had steady 30 FPS all the way across. Only tried a couple dog fights, but haven't seen any AI doing the famous F-16 rolls yet...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mVxXSrTGf4

It's just like it's supposed to be. At low RPM you only get the idling sound of the engine. When you advance the throttle the supercharger also picks up RPM and that is a turbine of sorts, so you get that high pitched whine sound. As your speed increases you also reach a point where the sound of the propeller and airflow partially obscures the engine sound, but that is not part of your video because it happens at somewhat high speeds (have a nice dive until you reach 500-600km/h or so and you'll hear it ;-) )

I think that they got the 109 sound spot on, the DB601 engine is well known for its supercharger whine.

In other words, it might take you some time getting used to it but there's nothing wrong with your installation or sound card. ;-)

Thank you very much for this betapatch!
I didn t install the patch and I m not playing this game by now, I m playing IL2 1946 and still having a lot of fun with it. I m reading this forum here since it was oppenend years ago and was following development since Storm of war was first announced and my expectations of this game were very high, like many people here. When CoD was released i bought it and was very dissapointed and put it away (didn t play it since then).
Today i looked a video of the new patch and I m very exited, the colours look very nice and the sound is emazing, I m totaly surprised! Bravo bravo bravo devteam, applause!! I can clearly see where this game is going. Just emagine this game in one year... I think its gonna be a lot of fun and immersive, and not to think the years to come. I can understand that some people here are pist off, because the game was/is not in that shape it should be as it was released and they have the right to speak out their unhappiness, but i have to say that some people will never be satisfied, as it is obviously here in this and other forums. Me for my part will give this game time to mature, because I can see it is going in the right direction, in my opinion. Just my 2 cents. Have fun with the new patch people ;-)

I think you are correct up to a point. The Patch haze is too strong at short range. Look at the background of your second pictiure, it is hazy to a similar extent to the Patch, but perhaps too blue, whereas the foreground has no haze.

Alex's video is fantastic - it takes a little of the subjectivity out of the comparison.

Personally I very much prefer the more muted and hazy colours of the beta patch. The overall feel chimes much more with what I expect (and know!) the British countryside to look like.

Interestingly, though, I think the video show up some of the subtleties. I think in the shots of very close externals (the hurri on the ground, the AA shooting) the shadows and "dark" areas are darker in the beta. Graphics dudes can correct me.

But I think those who think there was just a "wash" applied to the whole screen are wrong!

Thus: tweaking would seem to be possible!

May I remind you that you can not compare colors and haze in photographs with what you see with your own eyes. Just a simple polarization filter in front of the lense can make a huge difference, without even touching a software tool. ;) You can actually see distant clouds through a polarization filter, which would just fade into the general haze without the filter infront of your camera.
In my opinion are the new colors and the haze far better than before, but I just had short test.

Look at Post #14.

Luthier's post in response to someone asking about the FSAA situation:

Smoothing is still the same, obscheprotseduralnym cheap software that has been in the past.

Global perelopachennye change the graphics engine, which includes correct and FSAA, and a very large number of other changes, improvements, and the right technology, we wanted to finish this, are tightened. We decided not to wait for them, and give you a play with sound and with E4 and flowers and everything else.

Pretty obvious what's being said there, even if Google Translate turns it into Engrish. :P
