It's always better to wait a bit when it comes to details about plane crashes, the press very often gets it wrong in their rush to be first. A buddy o' mine was once reported killed in a plane crash in the USVI, when in fact all that really happened was he landed on a beach and took off again a couple hours later. "The reports of my demise have been greatly exagerated" became one of his favorite sayings after that.
Sure hope no one was hurt at Bournemouth.

The footage on the BBC site isn't great but it looks like Red 2 flies into the ground on the run-in and break at the end of the display - didn't see an ejection but the crash is obscured by trees on the film so he could have bailed at the last second - fingers crossed :(

Thanks for the updates guys.
Latest is the MOD have confirmed flight lieutenant Jon egging was today killed when his RAF red arrow crashed just outside Bournemouth airport.
A mayday was heard before he went down and it's said he did everything possible in the last few seconds to avoid civilian casualties etc.
RIP mate.

Their record is exemplory(sp) with re. to safety im sure the MOD will investigate this to the fullest ............... you would hope so!!!

It was a fatal crash and it was Red 4 that went down....
Flt Lt Jon Egging, 33, from Rutland, was killed when his Hawk T1 aircraft - Red 4 - crashed about 1km south east of Bournemouth Airport at 13:50 BST.
RIP.....:(

It is indeed sad. Maybe he survived the crash because locals jumped into the river to get him. Obviously I'm only speculating though from what I've read while over here.
It's a tragic loss. Thoughts go out to his wife.
Since it's a military jet though it's a very tight cordon around the crash site. We will hear more on it soon I'm sure.

So sad to hear Jon Egging (red 4) died in today's crash, this got me thinking, he used the last few seconds of his life making sure his Hawk T1 was as far away as possible from harming anyone. We have to many knobheads in this country with the "Bollocks to it as long as I'm ok" attitude as the riots not so long ago proved, did i know Jon Egging personally no, but his actions speak loudly of the man he was and what this country needs more of! RIP

If you watch the footage, he did manage to level out, so I don't think it was a wingtip stall, even though he did turn very sharply. It's more likely to have been a compressor stall or flameout, and at that altitude he would not have been able to recover and restart the engine in time.
I suspect he stayed with the aircraft rather than ejecting, due to there being housing on the flight path and that he chose to 'spike' the aircraft into the ground in a field and it went horribly wrong. A truly brave man.
The AAIB will report as to the actual reason for the crash in due course, so these comments above are just my opinion.
As others have said, and having seen more than my fair share of accidents, I hope his family are coping.
All I can say was it wasn't a flame out or engine cut off - the smoke was still on - meaning the exhaust gass temp was still high.

This was written a long time ago; however, it seems totally appropriate under the circumstances....
"High Flight"
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent lifting mind I have trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
- Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
Rest in peace, John Egging; a truly brave and selfless pilot....

There are comments in today's press that bird remains were found amongst the wreckage of Red 4, hinting that a birdstrike may have been a likely cause.
A birdstrike would almost certainly have caused a flameout and John would have had no chance to recover. His final act of protecting others as the plane fell was an outstanding act of airmanship.

No I'm no expert, you can trust me on that, but my Dad (with 26years as an RAF firefighter and having worked on the Red Hawks) says that there shouldn't be any remains left - it would have destroyed the engine but ejected it's self - unless it was a HUGE bird. It's also got high enough engine temps to keep the smoke flowing - I doubt it was a bird hit..
Although, I did see this earlier:
