View Full Version : Friday July 1 Update – Meet the Team

Sometimes, mere words are not enough.
Sometimes, it’s important to see the faces that give you all those emotions.
So let’s start.
(I’m a game developer, not a photographer, OK)
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6035/5890587115_fa044a3c76.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/64714588@N04/5890587115/)
This is Valery Kornilov, our new sound designer. We are redoing our sound from scratch. It is proceeding at a better pace than expected. It’s already in a working alpha state, and everyone loves it. The only thing that makes it an alpha is that a lot of events do not play sounds yet. 95% of the remaining work is simply adding new samples.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5031/5890587187_8827e804c3.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/64714588@N04/5890587187/)
This is our modeling isle. Sergey Karavayev is the owner of the sexy derriere you see in the bottom left. He’s the guy who built the BR-20M for Cliffs of Dover, and tons of planes for Il-2. He is also the author of the silhouetted plane some of you may remember from V-E day.
The striped shirt above Sergey belongs to Peter Vysotin, our genius landscape programmer and hardware expert. They are installing a brand new GeForce 570 into Sergey’s machine.
Above them is Marina Kurdyukova, our MAI-educated 3D modeler who continues to create great-looking 3D models for BoB’s sequel.
Ilya Steshov is the striped shirt behind her. He’s also our 3D modeler, ship expert, and game designer currently working on various multiplayer scripts and play testing.
The empty seat behind him belongs to Pavel Kayuroff, our self-taught jack of all trades genius who is currently taking over some aircraft physics tasks.
Oleg Radyshevsky, our jolly giant, is sitting there modeling a Soviet pilot uniform. He is the guy who made most of the characters you see in Cliffs of Dover.
The shy guy in headphones is Dima Bespyatkin, our underappreciated aircraft modeler who built Cliffs of Dover’s Hurricane. First one to guess what he’s building now wins, I don’t know, probably nothing at all.
Let’s move over to the expert row.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5023/5891153196_dcda02d5d7.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/64714588@N04/5891153196/)
Dirk-something number 7 is Lesha Pervov, our all-around programming expert. He is currently discussing improvements to the shoreline render with Vitaly Melehin, the uncharacteristically handsome graphics programmer. He is the person behind the amazing optimization effort and performance improvements that we all witnessed over the past few months.
The head behind them belongs to Vitaly Kozhevnikov, our map maker. Winter is coming.
The two gentlemen on the other side our walking aircraft encyclopedias, Alexander Porozov and Yuri Shoubin. Also MAI-educated, with decades of combined experience building real aircraft at Sukhoi OKB, they know everything there is to know about aircraft.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5032/5890587325_9cf8191cb0.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/64714588@N04/5890587325/)
The other side of the room contains Mikhail Volkov, our new aircraft AI expert, who is continuing to work on the orders menu. Behind him is Igor Egorov, our lead programmer and the guy without whom neither Cliffs of Dover nor the original Il-2 could have ever been anything.
And finally, in the darkest corner of the office, is Gennady.
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6038/5891153338_0acdbd450b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/64714588@N04/5891153338/)
No one knows what he does.

LOL, that's what we say about some of our superiors. ;)

Dima Bespyatkin is modeling a FW-190! Oh Oh Oh..... Or a P-47!!! Oh Oh Oh!!!! Or maybe an X-Wing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE LET IT BE AN X-WING!!!!!!
Sorry.... got carried away.
Anyhow, Oleg Radyshevsky is working on a Soviet uniform? Guess we know where the first expansion is gonna be.
Is that an IL-2 Joystick box on Mikhail Volkov's desk? Where can I get one of those?
I think Gennady, over there in the dark corner of the office, looks pretty sinister. Probably ex-GRU, there to keep an eye on everyone..... I can hear him now.... "BACK TO WORK! NO TALKING! WHY ARE YOU CRYING???? THERE IS NO CRYING IN GAME DESIGNING!!!!":-P
Keep up the good work guys. We are counting on you.

This is such a good post Luthier - thank you. Putting faces to names and faces to as yet unknown developers is a genius idea. Really looking forward to the new sound and continued progress with CoD.

That was nice Luthier but, where is a picture of yourself????
You know, to print it, cut it and add it to the iconostasis (wall with icons (sacred pictures)),
...or put it on the Dartboard (if things do not turn up) ;)
Thanks for the feedback and for the time you spent thinking about us! :)

Very nice, and very smart of you Luthier, thanks.
The post is a joy, but even more is read between the lines; it can be seen that you keep the optimistim and you have had more time too. Both are very good signs to see in the ship's Captain.

Winter is coming.
Luthier, are you a "A Game of Thrones" fan by any chance ?? ;)
Thanks for the heads up, good to see that you are all very busy in correcting/improving the game but looking also at future already, should give some hope to those who think COD is dead already. :)

Luthier...nice to see some faces!
Now...Luthier, can i ask you something....what is happening with FSAA in COD?
There is no way on earth it is working and each time (and there has been 100s of threads or posts) somebody asks you dont even acknowledge there is a problem.
So is FSAA going to ever work in COD?
and when is the next patch? :)

you mean, the dark side of the force :D
See, it's not so hard, and we're not a so hard to please monkey crowd.. We just need honesty, and a fair relationship: give and take in as fairest amount as possible.
Even if you haven't said a word of game's state, it's enough for as, as it represents exactly what we ask from you guys: the will to openly communicate with us.
So.. thanks for the update, Luthier! And all of you have a nice weekend :)

This is something of a masterstroke.
Certainly putting these pictures out adds a personal touch, and something that was a pleasant surprise. It's nice to meet the team, and it's good to see them smiling and not looking like they're going to hang themselves any minute.
If you guys are still enjoying what you do, then I think it bodes very well for the future of the series.
It also bears pointing out to the forum members that the team is really small by development standards, and that we must remember that when we demand immediate improvements to the game.
Anyway, thanks Luthier for this post. It was a nice surprise.
PS-Now, a photo of yourself would be good.

Take my hat of to you for such a post, it's a bit late coming but it makes all the difference when it comes to bonding with the community, you have basically gave me something to grasp onto when I'm or We are talking about issue and patches etc instead of having an image of you on your own with a mountain of things to do and ready to throw the towel in.
I'm looking forward to the next patch as I'm guessing it will contain the new sounds wether they are Beta or not who knows

Ignoring overtime:
15 people x 8 hours
= 120 hours/ day
= 600 hours/week of coding.
I can live with that quite happily.

It is not a criticism at all. Rather, it clarifies certain things, like for example why the development of the sim took quite some time, and why we cannot expect major changes overnight.

After the last patch, this sim just simply the best up to date WWII sim.
I try and fly other sims but just keep coming back to CLoD. Even with the work that it needs. I'm getting pretty good at bombing London Bridge.:)
1 thing that I did see in the Video is you do not speak in the native language in Moscow (Russia).

Ummm this should drive all the girls crazy.

YouTube it and see for yourself.
Edit: I am sure someone will make this into something like: See they're so desperate their last grasp is to seek help from another sim see!!! Watch bet you.
YouTube it and see for yourself.
I'm on my laptop, it's not going to give me any idea :)
I'm on my laptop, it's not going to give me any idea :)
The ROF sound is amazing! Fingers crossed!
Damn,
it makes it so much harder to throw bricks when you've seen their sweet faces!
Lock Valery in the office and don't let him come out until the sound bug is fixed. 2 weeks, be sure! Meantime tell him we've moved to ROF to sample his work until he finishes the job.
I think Luthier is Gennady, grown a moustache. He has that look that says "Post that again and I'll...."

After reading the job description who would want the job.
Besides Luthier is doing an excellent job.
Well that's too bad. Trying to describe it would be like you trying to tell us what a banana taste like if we never had one. Fix your laptop.
Don't be ridiculous, a simple 'great, ok, rubbish etc' would suffice. Laptop isn't broken, it just hasn't got a decent set of speakers like my desktop system has.

Don't be ridiculous, a simple 'great, ok, rubbish etc' would suffice. Laptop isn't broken, it just hasn't got a decent set of speakers like my desktop system has.
Sorry I wasn't trying to be ridiculous to you I apologize. But they are very good.
But still get a Bluetooth headset / ear buds for your laptop.
I've no need for it, I'll have access to my desktop in an hour or so, I just wanted to see what peoples opinions were.

You got the main sound man from Rise of Flight? Now that is probably the most interesting thing I've heard in regards to Cliffs of Dover for a while. No wonder work is progressingly quickly with that, he would be quite experienced! :)
I hold Rise of Flight in high regard for its high quality, realistic sound. It is very well done, to the point that if you lean outside of the cockpit you can hear the air suddenly hit you. Or when you turn sharply you can hear the air buffeting over the wings. It is a huge addition to the immersion in that game.
If we got the same level of effects and quality in Cliffs of Dover, it would be a huge positive step forward in terms of immersion and overall feel of quality for the game.

Its a Thrustmaster.. one of my favorite joystick.. they also made a FORCE FEEDBACK version of the same thing and it was one of my favorite force feedback sticks. Sadly they dont produce it no more. The one he as is the non force feedback version. There is a logo of IL2 on the box because IL2 recommended that stick back in the day and was listing games compatible.
Oh how i miss that stick. It came with a detachable throttle lever as you can see on the left barely. The rudder control on it was the best also not including real rudder pedals of course. But it was a anagol lever that you could move left and right with your left and on the throttle lever. IT WAS AWESOME. I gotta grab another off of ebay.

It is not a criticism at all. Rather, it clarifies certain things, like for example why the development of the sim took quite some time, and why we cannot expect major changes overnight.
Or: BF 3`s development team, one of the biggest in the world, (now owned by EA) have been working on BF3 for around 4 years. (So far). The budget is closely kept secret but those in the "know" estimates some where between 100 and 200 million....dollars. BF and all its spin offs have been sold in 30 million copy's.(Witch dwarf`s in comparison with Call of Duty`s 55 million copys )
So, have CoD taken a long time to develop? Are we expecting miracles, and gets them on a regular basis? Well, judge for your selfe.
Btw, i agree with u. ;)

1. I have no business with the publisher because I have no problem with the way the game is published. All I want is to communicate with the developers.
2. If the developers wants to sell their product outside of Russia they better damn well make sure they have someone speaking English to satisfy these customers. That has NOTHING to do with goodwill. IF that would be the case they need a reality check.
3. If he would start to only post once in 2-3 month you can be sure that he can write a similar future like IL-2's in the wind.
4. I never said I spoke on the behalf of the entire community, learn to read.

Hate to leap in here, but a little clarification would be handy so we don't get ourselves in trouble. What exactly counts as a swearword? I assume the worst words are filtered by the forum, whereas some users 'asterisk' their own swears on occasion. So for example, assuming 'hello' in this case is a swear:
'hello' - ban (obviously)
'h*llo' - ban?
'*****' - ban?
Is it ok to include a swear if it is self-censored, and to what degree?
I ask not because I plan on insulting people, but because some methods of self-censoring are still considered 'swears' by some and not others, and I'd rather know than be caught out by accident. Sticky is locked or I'd have asked there.

I agree to a point. In Australia 'god dam' is not swearing and Bugger me is not swearing. It's even in a ute commercial here as the main catch cry. I hope this forum is for all countries other than Americans and therefore 'our' acceptable language is ok. The word that came from the phrase 'Storing High in Transport' is pretty mild now and is contantly used in programs, whether on television or radio, in time frames that 'kiddies' hear. The main ones that should be banned are obvious, although there is a brand name that swaps the c and u as the middle letters of a strong swear word.
I suspect it is how these words are used in context. I would like to see people banned when they purposely 'got off their dial' at someone for having a different perception or opinion. Anyway, that's my two bobs worth.

No worries mate. Yeah, store high in transport came about when they shipped manure in the hull of the old ships. The water would soak into the bags, swell up and burst the hulls. They wanted the bags stored higher during transportation so they stenciled S.H.I.T on each bag. Englanders would see masses of manure bags on the dock with S.H.I.T (store high in transport) written on them thus where the naughty word came from.

That's because this supposed etymology for the word is a load of the old proverbial itself. This word has a long history and there are many related words in other languages and is certainly not derived from acronyms on shipping containers. Not hard to find information if you are interested.

As a final word on the off-topic s-word: it seems to have deep proto-Indo-European roots, and certainly has nothing to do with sea transportation of manure. See here (http://fartheralong.wordpress.com/2003/12/30/107281521165233123/) (and yes, the word is used here - do I get a ban for this?) for a discussion of the myth, and any decent dictionary for its etymology.

I had a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro for my laptop as it was more portable than an X52 pro but it only last 3 months of heavy abuse on IL2 before it got twitchy and unreliable. Never going to buy a cheap stick again. The only stick I would consider now is the Thrustmaster Warthog.

Unfortunately I would also put the X52 Pro in the 'cheap stick' class. I have pulled apart and rebuilt both X52 Pro and the Logitech Extreme 3D and am actually more impressed by the internal build quality of the Logitech than the X52. I almost bought the Warthog but decided to build my own stick (http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showpost.php?p=301053&postcount=50) instead.

I looked at my own post and realize it reads like I was bad-mouthing that joystick. That wasn't my intent at all. The 3d Pro was the first joystick I bought many years ago, and it's still the stick I recommend to people when I'm trying to talk them into trying out a flight sim or space sim. (Oh crap, I just admitted to playing silly spaceship games on this forum, didn't I?) At $20 it's cheap enough to almost be considered a disposable toy, but it's still good enough to actually play a game. It's a great starter joystick. :)

+1, excellent for the price and a strong starter stick.

Cor, forgot all about Evochron mercenary... it looks good but the hideous 1980s cockpit always puts me off, which is a shame.
@ Strike - that looks cracking, bm'd their website! Good find! Checked the website and it's going to be an MMO, could be an EVE killer maybe?
I mentioned it in my PM, but there's a new X-Series game due this winter, details on the egosoft.com website :)

I know what you mean but I can look past it (.... No pun intended but feel free to groan if you wish!!!! :) )
The great thing about it is that it's not modelled in sector boxes as many older space games are. You can litterally travel from the "northern" most co-ordinate to the "southern" most co-ordinate in a continuous flight (if you're masochistic enough to sit and watch something akin to the old DOS flying through space screensaver for a bout a week or two!)
As I understand it, even though the game's been out something like nearly two years now, and not every star system has been "discovered."
Anyway. Sorry all. Well off topic now.

Yes the Evochron (http://www.starwraith.com/main/go.htm) series linked above is polished and some great fun. Highly recommended. Support your friendly local indy game developer! Evochron is made by one guy with a vision.
Allegiance (http://www.freeallegiance.org/) isn't exactly a space sim, but if you like team-based PvP dogfighting in outer space this will satisfy. The game is over ten years old but is kept alive by a fanatically loyal volunteer community.
The X series (http://www.egosoft.com/games/x_rebirth/info_en.php) of games are true space sims. Kind of lacking on the active dogfighting and heavy on the micromanaging tons of fiddly details with your star empire, but still a lot of fun. The new sequel supposedly coming out this year looks like the most visually beautiful spaceship game ever, IMO.
That classic of classics, Freespace is alive, healthy, and steadily growing more awesome all the time thanks to modders at Hard Light productions. (http://www.hard-light.net/) Has any game ever done outer space dogfighting like Freespace? I don't think so.
If you're at all interested in space sims, you need to know about Space Sim Central (http://spacesimcentral.com/), a website and forum set up by a guy dedicated to keeping track of absolutely everything going in with space sims. You'll be surprised at how many independent projects are in the works out there. Mainstream developers have largely left the genre behind, but there's still a lot of talent and dedication outside the big developers.
Speaking of talented independent developers... Shores of Hazeron (http://www.hazeron.com/) is also made by just one guy with a vision, and it's one of the most ambitious bits of game design I have ever seen or heard of. Ever. This is a space sim MMO that promises everything Infinity: Quest for Earth (http://www.infinity-universe.com/) does, with the enormous difference that Hazeron is functioning and playable right now, while Infinity is stuck in a neverending development process that puts Dover to shame. In Shores of Hazeron you design your own character kind of like Spore, explore your homeworld, collect resources, build up an industrial base, design your own spaceships(!!!), fly those spaceships seamlessly from planetary surface to atmosphere to orbit to deep space and all the way back down to some other planetary surface... all smooth, no loading screens. (Ok, ok... there's a loading screen for traveling from one star system to another.) The galaxy and all native life forms populating it are procedurally generated; trillions of possible combinations, so no two systems will ever be alike. Planetary orbits are modeled - including binary and trinary systems with multiple gas giants and dozens of moons - so the heavens are constantly in motion, unlike Eve's and Evochron's stationary stars and planets. My homeworld orbits a gas giant... I have to be careful about when I launch, because if the giant is in the sky I might accidentally launch straight into its atmosphere and burn up. I colonized another moon of the same gas giant, and later when I returned to my homeworld I looked up in the sky and could see the lights of my colony on the moon's surface. I'm starting diplomatic gestures with the empires exploring and colonizing star systems nearby; maybe we'll be allies, maybe we're going to war. And oh yeah... there's opportunity to do some real dogfighting in this game, not just Eve's point and click combat.
Hazeron is in early alpha testing. Only a fraction of the planned features are implemented right now. All the game's graphics and sounds are ugly placeholders. The servers are unstable. The game is buggy as hell. On a busy night there are 40 people online. With all that... it's the best space sim and the best MMO I've ever seen.
But right now I'm enjoying Dover more.

Smart move by Maddox.
A lot of the (unfounded) criticism from people of this forum was along the lines that Luthier had released an unfinished product and was raking in the cash before selling up and moving on. From reading these posts, uninformed people (like me) could get the impression that Luthier was basically working on his own, muddling around.
The perfect answer is to see a busy office, people buzzing around, working hard and looking like they're really into what they're doing. Especially the evil looking guy in the corner ;)
Glad you got my £30. Looking forward to the future! (Especially Spitfire fixes hint hint lol)

Good to see faces with names.. I just picked up CoD yesterday... and I have no doubt that it will grow into the monster that IL2 is in the flight sim world.. My main beef was with the distribution.. I fully understand that the complexity of this sim means that there will be issues.. but as I have been saying for at least the past 6 years.. I have no doubt that 1C will do the right thing.. and we will STILL have the best WWII combat sim on the market..
Ahh Bearcat, good to see you here m8. If you thought the il2 forums were full of kindergarten posters then what we gave here is pre-school.
I sincerely hope we get a board for adults soon.
You hang in there cobber, don't get too disillusioned, remember age will weary them.

Hello Mr Luthier. I am a loyal player of the IL-2 serie. I have been playing it since the first release of the IL-2 back about 10 years ago. And I have bought every add on which were released later.
I have been reading your post on this forum and I just want to ask, are you one of the developer for the IL-2?? It just from the way you post and the material you posted here, it seems that way. And if you are, may I ask you one more thing, are you guys planning to make the eastern front version of the "Cliff of Dover"? I am speaking for all of my friends in China because we all loved the Soviet fighter dynamic campaign in IL-2:1946. If you know of it, can you tell me and the roughly releasing date?? Thanks a lot.
Best wishes
Flanker
