View Full Version : Ok I give up, how do you get the joystick to work?

Re-installed the drivers for my Logitech Extreme 3D pro. Works in the joystick config screen in Windows. Works in DCS-A10, Arma2. In Cod nothing, I went into the controls config to try and maybe re-assign to the joystick, nothing, no response. In game, nothing.

Any ideas?

Sorry, cant be of help here. I use the Hotas Warthog and it works perfect with some profile programming effort.

Try to configure your joystick as "Preferred controller" if you haven't already done so.

Well I have a simular problem my joystick works fine with IL2 1946, but with CoD only the throttel is working, the rest is not reacting at all, so that at the moment I can only fly using my keyboard, which is a bit suboptimal.
I am using a Saitek EVO.

I think I had some problems also with extreme. Try this:

- Launch a game where you are already using extreme and play it for a moment

- Launch CoD and go to settings and controls and see if you can now set extreme to control axis, rudder etc..

hey there have a Logitech extreme 3d aswell and it works for me 100%. my question is how do you setup your controlls ingame?

It wont even let me set it up within COD, when I double click the box to re-assign the axis and move the stick..absolutely nothing happens. I'll try that other suggestion in a bit with another game first..

I have the same joystick, and same problem w/not being able to use the joystick w/this game,I thought I read that it works w/older joysticks?Arrows on the keypad don't cut it.Man this game needs a ton of patch's.It runs like a slide show.

The advice to first play another game with the joystick seemed to work, I was able to get it assigned after! Lets see if it stays assigned tho

I had problems assigning my X52 main axis and throttle. Does each axis change from the default one shown in the box when you try to assign them? Mine would not change and the bar graphs showed no movement. I left the mouse cursor on the 'clear' box and kept the mouse button depressed and at the same time moved the corresponding stick axis - it suddenly recognised the axis and then repeated for the others. Been fine since but I saved the profile just in case.

I had exactly the same problem and spent several hours yesterday before getting my joystick to work properly. Initially like you I had absolutely no joystick control. I finally got everything working though.

The first thing I tried which did work was to save the config file then alter the key/joystick settings in the config file. Then load the new config file. This gave me aileron and elevator control but no rudder or throttle.

I load and save the config files from

C:\Users\Rodney\Documents\1C SoftClub\il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover\

For me modifying the config file consisted of renaming Joystick2 in the config file to just Joystick.

In the config file I replaced

[HotKey pilotMove]
Joystick2+AXE_Y=1elevator
Joystick2+AXE_X=1aileron

with this

[HotKey pilotMove]
Joystick+AXE_Y=1elevator
Joystick+AXE_X=1aileron

and got elevator and aileron working.

I also got the joystick fire trigger working by replacing

[HotKey vehicle]
Space=fire

with

[HotKey vehicle]
Joystick+Key0=fire

The funny thing is I then got everything else working (i.e. throttle plus rudder) just by doing this

Same for me with the Saitek Evo...

But I would swear in a court of law that when I first attempted the above it did not do a thing, it did not recognise any joystick commands. I don't know why after a while (a very very long while) it eventually did start recognising them so that now I can just change joystick and key assignments from the menu.

By the way my joystick is a Logitech Wingman Force 3D.
I think part of the problem is that the default setup assumes you have 3 controllers (I guess for those with separate throttle, rudder pedals, and joystick). Its great that it can take 3 controllers but for those of us with just 1 controller it really throws things out especially when you can't initially reconfigure via the menu.

While in theory you should be able to reassign controls to match your joystick by doing this

if it does not work you could try using the same config file I have. But this is only guaranteed to work if you have an identical logitech Wingman forcefeedback stick to me. I suspect it will work for similar joysticks though.

To use my config file in the CoD game game to "Options" then "Controls" then "Save As" and give a file save name like "BackUpBeforeChanging to Rodneys Config File.ini" (or shorter if you like). This is your backup of your current settings that you can retrun to if mine don't work out for you.

Next save the contents of my config file below into the windows notepad editor (or any 'text' editor) and save as RodneysWorkingConfig.ini (or whatever as long as it ends in ".ini")

Then start up CoD again and go back to Options-->Controls but this time do "Load As" and select the RodneysWorkingConfig.ini file.

Then press Apply (pressing apply probably isn't necessary but I press it just in case).

You should now be able to play your game.

Note that my throttle and stick sensitivity settings are probably not ideal but at least they friggin work (took me hours to find settings that gave decent range of motion to elevator for my joystick, initially just had minute range and could barely dive at all and climbing wasn't much better - but with settings below I now have full range of motion of elevator - for my joystick).

Everything written after this sentence is the afore mentioned contents of my config file

This procedure should work.
Go into Axes settings.
Select and double click on the axis you wish to assign. ie Elevator. Once the popup box has appeared move your stick forward and backward to identify the axis. It should have recognized your movements.
Click ok.
Now......select or click another axis to move the focus off your new assigned axis ie select rudder or aileron to change focus.
Now.....go back and reselect your newly assigned elevator axis. Move the Joystick and watch the dead-zone axis bars at the bottom of your screen. It should move in sync with your Joystick movements. Adjust the dead zones/linearity if you desire while here.
At this point you can repeat procedure for all of your other axis and or devices (rudder etc).
Before you Apply and exit you MUST save the new configuration using the save button, botton right.
Name your file ie X52...or Logitech or whatever. Save then Apply. Once you have done this it should recognize the saved file each time you load up.
If you attach another/different device you will need to make a new config file as above. For instance if you attach a new set of rudder pedals to your computer....or add a Logitech G13....or even a set of driving pedals for another game, like the fanatec or logitech G27 and forget to unplug them, you will need to repeat above procedure as the game or windows reassigns a new device number. So before your Joystick was Joystick1 it may now be reassigned as Joystick2 beacuse your driving pedals for some other game are recognised as JoyStick1 now. It sounds like pain in the ass but its really pretty easy......unfortunatey thats how Windows works with game controllers. Its even worse if your like me and play racing games, have multiple steering wheels and multiple joysticks for different games.
