UN Resolution "all necessary measures" = Mission Creep = Air Strikes against the miltary infrastructure in general, unless Gadaffi stands down and leaves - which I doubt unless his supporters desert him! Unfortunately, air strikes have a nasty habit of killing the people they are supposed to protect. I don't hold out much hope for a peaceful solution but I suppose it's the 'lesser of the two evils' if it comes to that.

It is unlikely that they will see any dogfighting action. Our jets are superior to the Libyan planes so I reckon if necessary our pilots will just be on the ground attack. Even so I wish them the best of luck.

Well, an easy solution to destry the tanks has been used before (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/2919249.stm) - same tanks as the Libyans too, basically. So thats no problem.

If they do end up needing to ground attack in the city, then you can hit them with a Brimstone/Hellfire, I believe both the British Tornado and Typhoon can carry the Brimstone. I'm not sure what the US, Danish and French will use though. I'm suprised they aren't using UAVs to a greater extent.

The French airforce are there already and according to the BBC have started firing already. Looks like they are engaged in ground attack but what looked like a Libyan bomber was shot down earlier.
Don't know who knocked it out but close up photos on the news showed the pilot ejected way to close to the deck and was killed.

The mid east is turning into a real boiling pot. Military spending cuts are looking more and more stupid to me

I'm not convinced air strikes alone will see the job done and the USA senate commitee are divided with strong opposition to sending in more of their ground forces into another arena. A lot depends on wether Gaddafi loses internal support and leaves. The end game is 'regime change' despite not being the UN mandate and this intervention will continue untill that objective is realised.

Looked like a Mig-23 to me, part of the resistance wasn't it? Pity he died, but in a civil war it was always going to happen.

I don't think Gaddafi will just up and leave, the way he's going - it looks like he might be tried for war crimes.. Could end in another Saddam Hussein, hopefully not though.

Well I don't think the Gadafi forces look up to much opposition. The BBC showed some old banged up Russian T72s with some rabble in plain clothes on them. I thought they were rebels but they were Libyan army regulars. Seriously unimpressive looking fighting force

I saw that tank footage but on another News channel and they said it was a captured tank in one of the rebel strongholds. Gadaffi has a large number of mercenaries in his armed forces including African, Serbian and various other European countries. His regular army is very reliant on these but my bet is that they will start to leave.

It's confirmed the Mig that went down was a rebel aircraft. There is a suggestion on the BBC it was shot down by his own people by mistake.
Those rebels need to get themselves grounded asap. It's going to be a nightmare for coalition pilots identifying hostile ground targets let alone friendly jets in the air.
This looks like it's going to be a clusterf@@k to me

The rebels don't need any planes in the air. Our forces can do that job and their planes will confuse us and their AA. They need more organisation overall to stop them doing things like shooting their own planes down.

I don't think this is going to end well...

AS for military spending cuts I don't think that they are bad as people make out. The Libyan air force isn't up to much, no any army in that area. We only need an air force our size if we are to face another superpower which the UN is meant to prevent.

Talk about mission creep, this is more like mission leap. This was supposed to be a no fly zone operation to prevent Gadafi using air power but it now looks like a full on assault

Maybe so, but doesn't it show to the rest of the world that we can do it effectively? That we haven't faded since the Falklands and the Black Buck raids?

However, UK is in need of a long range bomber rather than the Tornado and Typhoon which are basically fighter bombers. Oh, yes, I forgot; the British government think that the US will always back us up so they can send their B-52's, B-1's etc over. Somebody with sense needs to be in charge..

I'm not disagreeing! Its nice to have a big superpower on our side that speaks the same language and such. I'd like to think you'll be there for us when WW3 kicks off; but it will typically turn into "who dies of radiation poisoning last, wins" so there will be no point it the end!

Wow that's depressing! In short though, I'd like to say I'd back a yank up in a situation!

Read this morning that the Tornado's that flew last night did not drop anything after identifying possible civilians in the vicinity. I'd rather see more of these type of missions instead of us just launching tomahawks off. At least the pilot can abort based on what he sees.

Totally agree Gilly. Those cruise missiles are too indiscriminate. Also anyone know how much they cost these days? I remember during the Gulf tomahawk barrage some crazy figures given out for each missile. Bit annoyed they are firing them like confetti when each ones cost could probably train a pilot and keep his aircraft in service for a year

Edit: $750,000 each. Not as much as I thought

Edit: mechanical failure is being sited as the reason. Both crew are safe.

Been there and done that on BOP:

"The fate of at least one J-21 Jastreb was not much better: sometime in 1997 one of the Serbian mercenaries, called Turcinovic, was killed while flying an ultra-low-level pass over Gbadolite and clipping a lamp post with his wing. The wreckage of his aircraft fell directly into a column of young soldiers on a parade, killing dozens of them. Turcinovic apparently fell victim to a massive liquor problem.[1]"

That's what the west does.

1.Blow a place up, or give the locals the means to blow it up themselves.

2.Offer to rebuild it "the only problem is our contractors see this as a dangerous country (for some reason nobody round here likes us) so they'll need paying 6x the normal rate... just sign here.."

3.Open a McDonalds.

4.Repeat till everyone hates you.

We should just cut straight to the chase and drop Big Macs on them instead of bombs.

Yeah, the UN banned onion rings last year, they are apparently seen as inhumane.. It happened around the same time that the "hot apple pie land mine"
got cancelled.. Just too dangerous.

EDIT: Slight problem : Apparently dropping Beef based food produce on Muslims is 'offensive', something to do with Christmas or something... Anyway, it's OK
