LOL - I am a complete nOOb to this genre and have been playing it on arcade (PS3 system). I didnt realise there was only 10 to 12 transports, if i am shooting down 22 planes then i assume there are two or more different types of plane in this mission??

First Off, nobody should feel the need to apologize for being a noob.
It just means newbie,but on the wonderful world of the internet it's almost a cuss word!

I'm on the same mission right now and having a fairly difficult time with it, (yes,i too play on arcade!) The wingmen are quite useless indeed, they take so long to make a kill,that i just keep ordering them,because i keep thinking my order didn't register..but,hey any and all help should be used,so i use them as much as possible!

Mostly the bomber squads (slower planes) and transport planes are being escorted by fighters.So,yeah you should check if there are any fighters, i can't remember if they are escorted in this particular mission..but the transports are easy to recognize since they always fly in squads. and have a yellow nametag or sign or whatever it's called. just check the names on the planes,watch for clusters and firewall them. the IL-2 also sports rockets,and while it's fairly hard to get a hit with them,when lined up perfectly,it's definetly possible to hit the transports with it (i managed to take out an entire squad with three rockets and a firewall ! Just spam the rocket button while you firewall with machineguns and ignore the groundtargets. I almost made it,but one squad keeps getting away!

Yeah, no need to apologize!

The reason I asked was that I have beat that mission and I am also playing at arcade level.

I had no problem beating this level. I never gave any commands and just shot down as many as I could and my men got the rest.

Cheers for the feedback fella's, i just played it again shot 23 down and still failed, the yellow targets are all ju52's, how many waves are there, it seems the more u shoot down theres twice as many to replace them LOL, gonna have another go now .

You have to concentrate your attacks, on the ones that are closest to the target area. I made that mistake the first time, but then I quickly realized what happened. So don't go for the one's that are far from their target, wait for them to get closer, and while you wait. Blast them with everything you've got.

I was having a rough time with this one.

as soviet ace said, always WEP to your closest transport formation (check on map), u can usually nail one as your fly towards it, then swing round behind the plane at the rear of the formation.
match their speed and use the rudder to spray them left to right. moving to the front as your destroy each one. this way you're not constantly turning the big slow IL2 to get planes that are just behind you.

Thanks for all your help Fella's, done it , the key is to do it quickly as you dont get much time before they reach the airstrip.

Where is the target area on the map? I must be blind as well as stupid as I cannot see it for the want of looking

As another poster put it I had 28 shot down and was told "mission failed...." This has to be the most frustrating mission yet, the inteligence for this mission is not up to the same as previous missions.

Since when has JU52's had rearward firing machine guns?
