I'll add to this something I noticed, I planted a sub (submerged) 2 hours away from a fleet as a Hidden target, three grid spaces away, but you can see it from the fleet when you take off. It's a white mark on the horizon, visible for tens of miles.
and I built a mission with the torp boats, they do not fire torps, but the deck gun fires incessantly. (also found you can change the ROF to up to 100, I have been using #'s in the 60'sand 70"s, seems like all guns fire to start, then taper off. But they still fire at objects they could never hope to see in RL.
and a little off topic, I was cycling through planes on a server last week, and found the B-24 I wanted to escort, he could see clouds between us, but from my perspective, it was a dot flying about 30 miles away. the clouds only prevented him from seeing me, not me from seeing him.
