What troops to replace Royal Snakes?

Then when I reached the islands I switched wolves and ancient bears for shamans and catapults, then in the dwarven lands I got cannoneers instead of catapults. Ancient Beholders? I've heard of Beholders and Evil Beholders, but never "Ancient" Beholders.
