Does not seem to have anything to do with entering a cave, started a new character (Skald), skipped the training cave and gained xp fine for one combat... and that was it. No more xp from combats for him!
The only things I have done before the next combat are: - Speak with the soothsayer NPC - Buy Soothsayer unit (1) - Speak with Dorri about the missing necklace and pick a few items laying around... it is utterly bizarre.
