But I have to get the BWL first.

Does the BWL help with Alarm Signals or just when you blow things up?

Yes, you have to get the BWL first but there are farming options for artifacts (black holes being the most common one).
Good question about the alarm signal, I remember testing this and discovering they didn't...but I may remember it wrong.
