.
Poor ![]() Total U.S. bomb tonnage dropped during: World War II = 2,057,244 tons Vietnam War = 7,078,032 tons (3-1/2 times WWII tonnage) ![]() War is hell. In Belgium and North of France every an each year tons of ammunition of the first invasion (1914-1918.) of Belgium by Germany are still found live and dangerous sometimes with chemicals and of both sides. From time to time in large quantities. |

Ironically, on the same day another unexploded ordnance was found - in Warsaw, on construction site of a metro line. This was a "bit" bigger example however - 600 mm shell from "Karl" mortar (don't know whether it was the 2-ton or 1,7-ton one). Fortunately we didn't have to do similar fireworks show in the middle of our city! Bomb disposal guys managed to get it out of here.
Cheers. Last edited by Art-J; 08-29-2012 at 06:13 PM. |

Glad to hear that this thing could be removed without harm or damages.
I guess they dig up several of them everyday all over Europe ... |

Actually it was 226.8 kg as the found Bomb was a US 500lbs General Purpose.
I think that was one of the most used Bombs at those Missions, as they are the most found ones at least around Bavarian Cities like Munich, Nürnberg and Augsburg. |

Some pictures after the event:
http://www.sueddeutsche.de/muenchen/...engt-1.1452853 Even a metal grating was bent through the explosion. Some shops burnt down, many windows smashed. Experts for buildings now examine the houses in terms of stability before their inhabitants can return to their homes. I just wonder why they did not use water soaked hay. |
