I think part of it is game design. I read the instruction booklet that came with the sim and there is a section on gunning and how they wanted to make it much harder and more realistic in this sim.

I find it almost too hard though, and it's not very intuitive. I wish it controlled a little more like the IL2 gunner positions did by default, using the mouse but tweaking it a bit to make it more realistic. How about something like this?

Your mouse controls the gun aim, you can slide the turret any way you want by pressing a "mount" key, then press this key again when you have the turret setup at the angle you want. How it goes back to mouse control. Pressing another key reloads the gun, and have a right click for "aim down sight".

If anyone has ever played Red Orchestra 2 and used their cover system with a MG34 machine gun this will make more sense. I think they if make made something like this it would be a lot more fun and less clunky, yet still be more realistic and challenging than original IL2.
