The truth is if it took nearly 7 years to make what we have now, then re-writting the graphics engine to be completely new but look the same, is gonna take a heck of a lot longer than the present time frame.
I think the development announcements we recevie are probably displaying unrealistic progress reports in an effort to ease the tension and appease the community. I wouldnt expect anything in terms of functional patch or even beta till the summer or maybe later, thats just being realistic not negative.
