You can actually use the AI no overheat "feature" as a cheat offline. If you fly autopilot to the target you start the battle with a cold engine.

One of the most annoying features of current AI with respect to to the offline autopilot is the way it can use flaps without damage at high speed. This means if you exit autopilot at high speed there is always a risk of flap failure as they can be fully extended when you resume control and immediately fail.
