It's not a perfect explanation, but it gives you an idea.

It's a good idea to practice in Single Player (pick the cross country mission so you start on the ground and are not jumped by enemy aircraft). Be sure to have icons turned on in the Realism settings so you can verify your actual (when you hit "map") aircraft direction vs your compass reading -- which you then set on your gyro compass.

It's a good practice to note the position of the sun in relation to where you took off from and where you're heading. In a dogfight or other emergency you may not have the opportunity to peer down at your compass. (The gyro may be out of adjustment, anyway. The magnetic compass may be jumping around, too). If you remember that the way home is to have the sun on your right wing you can quickly set a rough course -- it can be a life saver.

On the runway at take off, note the time of day = position of the sun. Sunrise = East, Sunset = West, Noon hour = South, Midnight = You're screwed.
