You probably have already figured it out by now, but...

Try using the Elixer of Life on it, or the staff. I forget what to use since it's been a while and I can't look right now(I can look soon if you still need help and no one else answers).

What you are trying to do is bring the statue back to life, then you fight it and get the sword.
