External views won't let me back into cockpit view

I used to have this same problem, but now I can't remember at all what exactly fixed it. The problem disappeared somewhere along the time I was changing and rechanging every single setting in the game, it seemed.

I know it happened when I had the various views mapped to a joystick hat. Now I use the F2 F3 etc. keys and the problem is corrected. But a lot of other things changed too.
