My box had no mention of steam either, trust me steam is needed
 As for it being the same version, obviously everyone is updating to the same versions as us. Duh, steam does not change from place to place, release date may but the basic game is always the same. Now when steam update the game to their release (the one we are actually waiting for) only then will be officially know if their is indeed an updated version. I do not hold out any hope that it is, but only steam will tell
