Chickens happen to be the ultimate predator, a true descendent of the velociraptor.
My wife recently got four chickens and we have a relativly bug free back yard and a couple of eggs a day (they've just started laying). In our case the chickens came first! Though one assumes that the first chicken was hatched from a chicken egg that was layed by a proto-chicken that shared about 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the DNA with the chicken!
