I can tell you where to look but cannot remember the exact text for DX9. But at least you can check that it does not read the same as the line highlighted below (which is for DX10).

Open the file named 'conf' using notepad, you will find it in:

MyDocuments- 1CSoftClub - IL-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover.

[BOB]
EpilepsyFilter=0

[window]
DepthBits =24
StencilBits=8
DrawIfNotFocused=0
SaveAspect=0
Render=D3D10_0

I checked this conf.ini and it's using DX9.
Render=D3D9

Interestingly many of these settings files are also in C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover
but there some values are missing. For example all values starting from Render are missing from conf.ini in this Program Files\... folder.

DepthBits =24
StencilBits=8
DrawIfNotFocused=0
SaveAspect=0
Render=D3D9
width=1600
height=900
ColourBits=32
FullScreen=1
ChangeScreenRes=1
Frequency=60
posLeft=0
posTop=0

The config files were changed two patches ago, removing a lot of redundant settings that had been left there during the development process.

People that first installed the sim recently (that is, after the previous patch near the end of May) already have the config files that have the new structure. Those that installed before that probably have the old config files.

If you want to get the new config files you can try this:

Thank you VERY much! I bought the game when it was released so I guess I had the old config files somehow interfering how the game works. After reading your linked instructions, I disabled Steam cloud and cleared the cache. I then had to reselect some settings (for example, all my game controller ids had changed: joystick1 was now joystick and so on), restarted the game and the low level gfx bug had disappeared. It seems I got better FPS also. I hope the game stays this way
