Playing multiplayer, sound was auto detected in options.

Dedicated server the kill actor scripts no longer work along with a few other issues pointed out in this thread.
This may already be posted - many pages to read through - but I was given this advice:

Try opening Windows (7) 'Volume mixer' and turn the Steam input right down to zero. It seems to be working for me although I've only been using it for a short while.

For the wheels sound try touching your wheels back on the ground after lift off, it seems to stop it. Yes, I know it shouldn't be happening.

I've had a decent improvement with this patch. Frame rates are slightly better, but overall it's much more smooth. The Stutter over buildings seems to be GONE, in fact, IL2 1946 gives me more stutter over cities than CloD does now.

I flew around a bit offline last night and shot up some ground targets in object-infested areas and found myself smiling as I played. Pretty good stuff. Unlike a lot of other ATI users, I seem to get the best performance in full screen mode. Turning up the settings does little to slow things down, the only thing I don't have maxed out is SSAO.

I also no longer need to force 3d clock speeds, thanks for that... that was a pain.

Even duct tape can't fix stupid... but it can muffle the sound.
