A lot of people are unhappy with the sound but I think the sounds are fairly good.
The most complained about are the gun sounds - but they seem fine when you consider you are in a cockpit and with engine and wind noise combined altering the frequency's you would hear dramatically. Just the speed you are traveling at would create big drop offs in higher frequency's to someone sitting in the plane while the guns are firing. External view sounds don't really matter to me - I spend 99.99% of time on internal view and only use external for screenshots. The speakers you use matter lots. Getting nice speakers that actually move some air will make a big difference. Headphones are fail unless you shell out for some good Sennheisers or similar. If you want decent sound - never buy computer brands like logitech etc... plastic boxes with 1 or 2 inch drivers and fake ports and fake wattages printed on them will never sound good. For sound I use Edirol(Roland) MA20D's connected with optical cable to an old WAMI24 Interface and the game sounds great. Most people don't realize that sound gear is just like graphics cards - need good powerful gear or you will get low quality results. |

Onboard sounds are ok but not realistic as almost every plane has same sounds. Think about car sim like GTR2 or rFactor, i think quite many would be complaining if Dodge Viper and BMW M3 GTR had exactly same sounds...
Guns and other sounds ok but like kimosabi said, thers no inertia sounds etc. Outside engine sounds are poor (those wich are from il2). All in all i give them 6 points out of 10. |

As Blackdog mentioned, and I agree that the sounds are useful, it's just that it's not enough "noise" imo. It's not a matter of taste on my part, more like a matter of expected sounds from RL experience. However, the in-cockpit sounds ARE good enough for the majority of players, I just wish there will be more variety/details to the whole sound package after a while. Especially between the different models and makes.
On another note, adjusting prop pitch can be done by ear even in IL-2 1946. The binaural stuff is there, we have the channels required, it can be done 100 more times more awesome than this with this game/sound engine. That I'm 100% positive of. |
