No, the hispano wasn't the problem, it was the fact that it was mounted upright and g forces would cause jams. Some genius had the idea of putting it on it's side, et voila, a reliable gun.

But since you are on the subject of reliable guns from the RAF you should read the story on wikipedia about the US attempts to 'improve' the Hispano
