I would not worry too much. Those are not the default skins, so I would expect that they have been included so that it is possible to make missions prior to the Battle of Britain.

With regards to serial number, if the game can't handle having a list of each serial number for every plane which flew in the battle (which is perfectly understandable) it would be quite cool if we were able to type a number in which would then appear as the serial code. Many people have access to the serial codes for particular planes which flew, so this would help to make the skin historically accurate.
It doesn't bother me personally, but I can see such a feature being useful if the game hasn't already been programmed with the known serial coded planes which flew (RAF).

The FMB may have changed since then, but anyway:



(just noticed there's only one slider for the weathering in this menu; maybe this has only been included afterwards)
