Hawker Hurricane Mk. I P3144, GZ.B, 32(F) Squadron.


Synopsis

This Gloster-built Hurricane (Contract Number 962371/38/C.23a) was delivered to the 11 Group, being received by No 32 Sqn at Biggin Hill on July 12th 1940.
It lasted only eight days in frontline, being shot down over Dover by Unteroffizier Mayer of III/JG51 (Bf 109E) on the afternoon of July 19th.
The Hurricane's pilot, Flt Sgt Guy Turner, baled out with severe burns.
The aircraft had accumulated 8 hrs and 15 mins flying time when it was lost in combat.


Camouflage

This Hurricane wore the 'B' pattern of the Temperate Land Scheme consisting of dark earth and dark green uppersurfaces.
The undersides were painted BS381 (1930) Eau-de-Nil overall.
The propeller spinner was in night.


Serials & Codes

It wore 40-inch high medium sea grey 'GZ.B' codes, the largest used on Hurricanes and the nearest to the official size* .
The fuselage serials were 8 inches high and night.

* Rmk: The Squadron code letters varied somewhat in size, but those of 30-inches were commonly used.
The official requirement was for code letters of 48-inches, but where space was insufficient smaller sizes were permitted

Roundels & Flash

35-inch diameter pre-war coloured bright red, white, bright blue and yellow fuselage roundels.
The upperwing red and blue roundels were 49 inches in diameter.
No underwing roundels were applied.
The fin flash consisted of 7-inch wide bright red, white and bright blue bands.
