Yes, i think that requesting landing clearance sets the AI wingmen from "follow the leader on his landing approach with my gear and flaps up, stall and crash into him" mode to "circle the field" mode.

I usually also order them to land when i'm safely on the ground or on finals, if they haven't yet hit the last waypoint where they automatically switch into a trail formation for landing.
