Crossworlds GOTY freezing issue

I have just purchased the GamersGate version of the game. I am running it on Win 7 x64, have tried both with and without XP sp2 compatibility mode. Updated all drivers, DirectX and so on.

The problem is when I try exiting the game, Alt-Tabbing or changing any screen options the game freezes my entire system forcing me to restart the machine.

Anything that can be done about this?
