I think the smoke would stay like that. Remember, the plane would move that distance in maybe less than 2 seconds, and the smoke will not dissipate much in such short time.
To me it looks good.

I agree. In a still screenshot the faded edit looks better but if the smoke faded away that quickly (~1 sec I'd guess), it'd look very odd in motion. The second screenshot (with the fuel spray) shows a longer smoke trail and can be seen to be expanding and dissipating at the origin.
